The newest fan of Frankie’s South Philly Cheesesteaks is also its biggest by a sizable margin. Phoenix Sun Shaquille O’Neal couldn’t get enough of the Red Bird Cheesesteak at the 2574 N. Campbell Ave. sandwich shop recently when the team held training camp at McKale Center on the University of Arizona campus.
“The first time he came in, Shaquille told me, ‘If your sandwiches are as good as people tell me they are, I’ll be back,’ ” said co-owner Frank Santos.
They were and O’Neal was. He brought in teammates Amare Stoudemire and Sean Singletary the next day. “We wanted to give them their privacy, but after they were finished, Shaq came into the main dining room, said hello to the customers, let people take photos and even signed our guest book,” Santos said. “He couldn’t have been more of a gentleman.”
And the basketball star’s assistant stopped in to get O’Neal a Red Bird to-go on the Suns’ last day in Tucson.
