The Phoenix Business Journal recently reported that UnitedHealthcare of Arizona will not participate in the Arizona health insurance exchange. United has also declined to participate in other states’ individual and small group exchanges, saying they want to take a wait-and-see approach with Obamacare. United is a big player in the large employer health insurance market.
That leaves the Arizona individual and small group health insurance market to the following companies that are expected to be part of the Arizona health insurance exchange:
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona
Cigna HealthCare of Arizona
Health Net of Arizona
University of Arizona Health Plan
Because the Arizona exchange will be run by the federal government, there is no official word yet on which companies will participate and what premiums will be. Each of these companies, except for Compass CO-OP, have been active in the individual and small group health insurance markets in Arizona for many years. Compass is a new, not-for-profit that received start-up funding from the Affordable Care Act.
I’ve been told that companies and premiums for the Arizona health insurance exchange might not be available until September.
