Heh, don’t forget the other old reliable, swamp gas. Not to mention the attempt at Exeter, New Hampshire, to explain sightings as the lights of the nearby USAF base. The one fell apart when the Air Force attempted to demonstrate the lights being turned on and no one could see a thing from the vantage point selected. Oops.

Yes, because in U.S. history, it's always that "weather balloon" that mystifies our military. Roswell, Battle of Los Angeles are classic cases. The official Air Force explanation in 1983 for the Battle of Los Angeles in 1942 was a weather balloon. That explanation insults the men and women of our military. As explanations for these things go, I agree with you, this one is not bad. The explanation given is actually kind of surprising for the PRC, because they’re publicly admitting that their air traffic control regulations are a mess — and that government is loath to admit that much of anything at all is amiss in the People’s Republic. Of course, it might also serve as a handy excuse for the government to go after the billionaires and bring them to heel, at least as far as how they handle their private aircraft.
