I noted the People's Daily article was chock full of advice and cautionary statements about the need for rational and scientific investigation. The fear is almost palpable when they make statements like "All of a sudden, different rumors are everywhere."
Don't want anyone to start questioning the Mandate of Heaven, after all!
"Traditionally, people in China are superstitious. The state has not favored the beliefs but the reality of the Chinese is still full of spirits and omens.

Heaven sometimes gives signs people try to interpret. As a rule mysterious signs are to be seen when the emperor is about to lose the Mandate of Heaven, i.e. his right to rule the people.

In old times the Moon Maiden appeared or the desperate moaning of the deceased could be heard. This kind of omens are of course old-fashioned in the 21st Century. Now people can gape flying saucers." -- from http://www.ufocasebook.com/confusionchina.html

Reading this article, I was reminded of something -- and this was what I've read of Soviet research into ESP. Although intrigued by the possibilities offered by ESP, there were very serious doctrinal conflicts with communism, which demanded "rational" explanations for the effects recorded by their scientists' research.
I wonder if the People's Republic isn't facing a similar ideological quandry in confronting the reports of UFOs. Not to mention that "mass sightings" of UFOs could also be taken as a sign that Heaven no longer smiles on China's ruling classes. something of no small import in the far east.
