by on Sep. 23, 2010, under UFOs

Dan Marries of KOLD News 13 has reported via Twitter that residents on the NW and SW sides of Tucson have reported a UFO.

He indicated that more than a dozen calls have been made to the KOLD newsroom regarding the object. The triangle shaped object was reported to have flown over an intersection near Starr Pass.

As it passed over the intersection, the traffic lights flickered.

10:10 PM  KOLD News 13 has placed calls to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, DPS and others. A representative from Davis-Monthan stated that they did not have anything in the air matching the description of the object. Comments are still being posted on KOLD News 13′s Facebook page by witnesses, with one commenter insisting that it was planes and that she saw them land. Others, however, insist that what they saw was not a plane.

OK Cherlyn your on!!! Go for it!!! This one should be good!

    • Cherlyn Gardner Strong

I hope it isn’t Venus, Jupiter or Uranus! Although they aren’t triangular. Very curious about this…12 minutes until the news!

      • Anna

Jupiter and the moon have been sort of aligned and are lighting up the sky together the past two days and that may have lead to these claims.

        • Cherlyn Gardner Strong

Yes, planets shining brightly do tend to mislead people. The reports said it was triangular shaped with lights around it, though. I hope someone got a picture or a video.

Jupiter. The moons are the “lights around it”.

I actually did a reminder post about Venus and Jupiter earlier in the week. I’ve been watching Jupiter especially through my telescope, it is absolutely gorgeous! I hope that’s not what they saw and I hope that they got a video or picture of it! Thanks for sharing the link! Perhaps some eyewitnesses will check the link and see if that’s what they saw.

Well, there are certainly a lot of planes flying over my house here on the East side, but no triangle lights. Actually, if you look at the side of the plane, the tail-light and the wing lights from a certain perspective will appear triangular, he he …€

    • Cherlyn Gardner Strong

Well, you never know, it could have been a plane. However, the KOLD crew said that they get calls about UFOs, but nothing like this. I guess we’ll wait and see who else had something in the air. They are still waiting for calls back.

“As it passed over the intersection, the traffic lights flickered.”… Were it a plane though, it couldn’t have disrupted the traffic lights.

True, unless it was a coincidence. However, a woman reported on Facebook that as the object flew over her home that her satellite tv went down and she had to reset it.

  • Sonora from Tumacacori

Starting at about 7:30 pm, and off and on until 9:15, a full display of “Phoenix Lights”, including 2 lines of sequentially lighting 6 or 7 amber lights that were miles apart, and a rotating chevron of lights, could be seen to the WNW of Tumacacori.  Wow.  Guess now I shouldn’t feel so bummed about never having seen the Aurora Borealis.

Your description matches what I saw: a line of lights above the Tucson Mtns. around 7:45 p.m. There were six to eight of them and the distance between each light was the same. I only watched them for a few seconds, then, starting with the southern-most light, they vanished, one at a time, in an orchestrated, symmetrical way.

Last night around 7:30 my husband and I were sitting on our deck.  Our deck faces the city of Tucson, (we live in the foothills of Vail) and in the SW sky when saw about 8 orange lights set together horizontally that would lower and fade in and out a couple times.  They were perfectly aligned and moved together as one for those who would like to say they were flare oder strs.  Anyways, after it stopped, my daughters friend face-booked her and said her mom and her saw the while driving.  That would have been great to see it up close like these other people did. I didn’t look triangular from where we were though.

    • Cherlyn Gardner Strong

Interesting! The photos on http://www.kold.com seem show a single light, which brought to mind Jupiter. Eyewitnesses stated initially that it was triangular shaped, with more witnesses coming forward with a description closer to yours with the multiple orange lights. Thank you for sharing!

My son and I saw the same exact thing you saw, they look like orange round bike reflectors right next to each other and then it disapear so quickly…

  • David S.

I live in Avra Valley and my back porch faces the Silverbell Mountains 7 miles away. There is hardly a night that goes by that I do not see some sort of lights due west/southwest. I thought last night’s full moon would make it too light out to see them. I saw them again last night. They sometimes are a single light, sometimes multiples, usually about 15 to 20 degrees up, they always last for 3 seconds and in random locations. These are NOT aircraft, I see the aircraft making approach to the airport about 6000 feet up in another area. These are NOT helicopters. I was was thinking of having a UFO night it is so often and definitely weird.

Me and my partner were in green valley when we spotted a line of lights that came on for just a few seconds than went off.  It did this two different times and appeared to heading north-east.  There was no noise and it was moving or floating slowly not moving like a jet or fast plane.  It was in the sky at about a 25 to 30 degree angle.  I would say it was close to 7:30 P.M.

    • Cherlyn Gardner Strong

Thank you for providing your account of what you saw. It’s appreciated.

These are military flares.  I saw them that night as I have in the past.  They are orange-y and line up in a row and then flicker out.  A few years ago I saw them in the same place, I-10 and marana-ish and I called the news room and they confirmed that the military was running planes back and forth and testing flares.
Military flares are a real thing. Here is a link to a sight that shows how/why they use military flares, some of them make great smoke patterns.

Make no mistake….I SAW this UFO or whatever it is very clearly from my home in the Tortolita Mtns. north of Tucson. I first saw them, then saw them again several times in a row about 20 mins. later. Initially, they looked to me to be near the area of Ina / Silverbell (just a guess) and then they moved north north-west. I saw the lights again over Avra Valley, which was the last time I saw them.
I am not one prone to seeing things in the sky and calling them UFO’s. I have had two previous UFO sightings….both in the month of October, in the mid 1980′s, again from my property in the Tortolitas. What I saw then would blow your mind. What I saw on the night of the 23rd. was not at all like the two episodes I had in the ’80′s…..but they were different than any other type of nighttime aerial phenomena I’ve witnessed since then. Thank You….Joel
