Scientists issue a reminder: It is not a UFO, it is simply Venus shining bright

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

Scientists generally issue a warning when Venus shines bright. They usually say something like: It’s not a UFO – it’s just the brightest planet shining brighter.

With eyes turned to the sky more than usual, Venus can startle those who normally don’t look up. Shortly after sunset, low in the west-southwest sky, you might notice Venus, which will be the brightest it has been in all of 2010.

Alan Boyle of MSNBC recently offered input for this in his Cosmic Log blog:

First, be aware that common objects can look uncommonly strange under the right conditions. It may sound ridiculous to suggest that Venus or Jupiter can be mistaken for flying spaceships, but there’s a perceptual trick known as the “autokinetic effect” that can make stationary objects in the sky appear to move.  READ FULL ARTICLE HERE

Yes, we mustn’t forget about Jupiter, also shining very bright. I had an outstanding opportunity to view Jupiter through my telescope on Friday night. It was a phenomenal view of the fifth planet from the sun!

As Joe Rao at Space.com also noted:

For many weeks, the planet that has dominated our evening sky has been brilliant Venus, visible low in the west-southwest sky for about 90 minutes after sunset. But after Venus sets, it is Jupiter that takes over for the rest of the night, outshining everything in the night sky but the moon.  READ FULL ARTICLE HERE

Three famous UFO sightings on today’s date in 1952, 1961 and 1976

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

Today is the anniversary of three different UFO encounters in three different decades. All of three of these encounters are significant in UFO history and are considered to also be among the best documented. Each deserve more than the short blurbs I am about to give, but a flu bug forces me to keep them short.

Other notable incidents also happened on today’s date, but these remain in the top three.

Included in each blurb are links that allow further reading for those who might not be familiar with these cases. All three cases occurred on today’s date, September 19th.

Operation Mainbrace Headline

Operation Mainbrace – Topcliffe UFO – England – 1952. At 11:00 am on September 19th,  a British Meteor jet aircraft encountered a UFO at Topcliffe, Yorkshire, England. As the jet approached for landing, a silvery object was observed following it. The disk-shaped object was said to have rotated on its axis while hovering, and was also observed by personnel on the ground. When the jet began circling, the UFO stopped and suddenly took off at high speed. The incident was one in a series of sightings during Operation Mainbrace.

Betty and Barney Hill UFO/Alien Abduction – New Hampshire, United States – 1961.

Betty and Barney Hill

On the night of September 19th, Betty and Barney Hill were driving back from a vacation in Quebec. South of Groveton, N.H., the couple spotted a light in the sky.Betty was curious for a closer look, as well as the opportunity to walk their dog Delsey. When the couple continued driving down the isolated road, the object approached their car and was said to have hovered approximately 100 feet above them. Barney got out of the car for a closer look and said he clearly saw humanoid figures in the windows of the craft.  He exclaimed, “They’re going to capture us!”, as he ran back to the car. The Hills lost several hours of time. They each would recall the details of events through hypnosis in the years following the incident. Incidentally, a later review of the case would assert that the Hills simply recalled false memories, likely based on an episode of The Outer Limits. The case was the first widely publicized case of alien abduction.

Tehran UFO incident – Iran – 1976. An object was visually spotted in the skies of Tehran, the capital of Iran, in the early morning hours of September 19th. Two F-4 Phantom II jet interceptors experienced electromagnetic interference and lost instrumentation and communication capabilities until they withdrew from the object. One of the aircraft suffered weapons systems failure while preparing to open fire. The incident is considered to be one of the most well-documented cases in UFO history, with senior Iranian military officers going on the record to state their beliefs that that the object was not of this earth. The incident report was distributed to top officials from the White House to the CIA.
