Saturday night UFO sighting in Phoenix determined to be flares by Air Force

by on Oct. 24, 2010, under UFOs

ABC affiliate ABC 15 received several reports last night about lights in the sky in northwest Phoenix, around 8:30 pm.

One eyewitness stated in an email to the station that she saw “what looked like 2 meteors falling from the sky, with flames and sparks trailing behind them, began turning and moving. Lights were going off and on, the flames and sparks would come and go.”

The explanation for the lights came rather quickly, with not one, but two explanations offered.

The first explanation came from Phoenix Fire Department spokesman, Scott Walker, who stated that people were seeing parachute exercises (possibly involving pyrotechnics) in the Deer Valley area. However, he was unable to identify the group performing the exercises.

Later, the U.S. Air Force identified the lights as flares from the Barry Goldwater Range, which is the official explanation for the incident.

wow the american air force must be very dumb to think they could pass that off as Flares.  Perhaps they have never seen flares before.  Do flares plummet, form a triangle, then form a pyramid?    sightings will increase to where the US cannot pass it off any longer, enjoy the show that has begun.

i agree wit u 100% every time when there is a UFO sighting the us gov always make something up like saying they were baloons or its a us airforce but very soon there is gonna be a day where they r gonna run out of lie’s.

I think you’re right Richard. Unfortunately, living in Australia, I couldn’t get good tickets to the show, so please keep your overseas cousins informed ;)

The Barry Goldwater gunnary range is 70 miles to the south of where these “lights” were seen. Also the FAA bans night time parachuting/pyrotechnics because it interferes with pesky things, like, say, med-evac helicopters, etc. The air force thinks it can explain away all UFOs in the Phoenix area by saying they were flares over the BG range south of Gila Bend. Also, folks, there was no gunnary practice on the range last night. Call someone in Gila Bend, where these things can be seen up close, and find out.

  • Shotgun Slade

UFO’s? They’re ALL weather balloons, planes, helicopters, birds, clouds, reflections from oceans, moon, stars, planets, comets, asteroids, etc. If you’re seeing anything else, you’re most likely seeing spiritual manifestations.

There ain’t no such animal as “little green men from Mars”… there ain’t NO “intelligent life” outside of planet earth… there are no other alien civilizations on other galaxies monitoring or attempting to contact us…

Get a life, loons! We are here in this universe ALONE, at the pleasure of our Lord, God. Now, go and get your life right… and do it NOW!

    • Cherlyn Gardner Strong

I don’t use the phrase “little green men”. It is a Hollywood phrase. My posts do not imply that UFOs are from “outer space”. Additionally, a UFO is a UFO until the object is identified. In this case, the objects were identified as flares. Some don’t agree with that identification. That’s fine. You don’t agree with the entire UFO/Extraterrestrial topic. That’s also fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

However, name calling of me and/or my regular readers is not something that I welcome. You did it twice, with “loons” here and “lunatics” below. I welcome your opinion, but I am asking you to please refrain from name calling.

Don’t waste time with people like shotgun willy here. Who cares what this jaded old hillbilly thinks? When people get emotional about the UFO issue it shows how afraid they are. Move on and save your breath for conversations with people who actually might matter, not bumpkin bill here.

Leslie Kean in her just-published book on UFOs, says that since 1969 (when
Project Blue Book was closed), the official US Air Force position on UFOs as
stated on its “fact sheet” about UFOs, is that:
    .
    - No UFO reported, investigated, and evaluated by the Air Force has ever
given any indication of threat to our national security.
    .
    - There has been no evidence submitted to or discovered by the Air Force
that sightings categorized as “unidentified” represent technological
developments or principles beyond the range of present-day scientific
    knowledge.
    .
    - There has been no evidence indicating the sightings categorized as
    “unidentified” are extra-terrestrial vehicles.

    .
For these reasons, the US government no longer investigates UFOs.
    .
Hence, if you are a patriotic American who therefore should accept
unquestioningly all that your government tells you about strange phenomena
over America’s skies,  there is no need to be concerned about the lights
    over Phoenix.

    • Shotgun Slade

If government has ever been right about ANYTHING, the government was right about UFO’s.

Besides, it has nothing to do with what our government (or any government) tells us, and you shouldn’t be making this about what government says or doesn’t say, because it never has been about that.

There are plenty of lunatics out there who would love to believe in extra-terrestrials… before they’ll ever admit that God exists. Who’s CRAZY NOW?

If you need government to be more important than life itself

      • Shotgun Slade

… then you prove it daily by allowing government to get bigger and BIGGER!

        • pharmakos

UFO’s do not preclude the existence of God. For all you know they are angels. Open your mind and shut your mouth. Now go get your dictionary and look up the word preclude so you can reply back with more trite rubbish!

      • mmmhmm

Prove that god exists first. (i don’t believe in aliens but u sound too  sure of yourself smartass)

    • Cherlyn Gardner Strong

There were two explanations, one from the Fire Department that wasn’t supported by any evidence. The second, official, explanation as flares by the Air Force isn’t being accepted by a number of people. Another commenter stated that the Barry Goldwater Range is not the area where the lights were sighted. When UFO news surfaces, I report the information and only add to it if I have evidence to support new information. In this case, I don’t have that information. I didn’t personally see the lights, either. I won’t assert that it was not flares until I have evidence that suggests otherwise. If there is evidence in the future that disputes this explanation, I will post that information. I don’t want to sensationalize information, because that also jeopardizes the cause that Leslie Kean and others are fighting for: responsible and fact-based reporting of UFO incidents.

    • Dale

      Wow… Really?

The Air Force has been caught lying – in their own documents!
They said they never investigated UFOs after bluebook – but there’s documents and incidents involving the Air Force and UFOs years after bluebook!

  • http://www.paulcook-sci-fi.com Paul Cook

Hey, Cherlyn, don’t apologize for reporting a story. And don’t feel the need to defend your reporting to someone who reacts negatively to the facts (as you’re able to report them) of the case. Shotgun Slade is a tea-partier who wants to inject his anti-big government beliefs into every story. This is just a story about what some people saw in the sky. Forget Slade.

    • RykeOden

Excuse me Paul but I read the entire article with all its comments and the only mention of any political motivation came from your comment, not slade.
Slade might be short many many marbles but really if we want to read something that creates a racial and/or political divide there is always the White House, let’s not inject the arrogance from Washington into such an interesting subject presented to us by Cherlyn.

  • bing

well more people seem to be reporting sighting of ufo’s over sightings of god these days . God should look into some publicity .

  • GodlessPeace

Unlike some losers in these threads not all of us believe in a fairy god that leaves his creations to suffer disease and wars and all kinds of calamities ,that is not a god, if it exists then it’s a freaking devil you child minded fools!

  • GodlessPeace

There is a lot more evidence of ET than there’s EVER been of god! Just try proving there is a god using the same criteria as proof of ET or anything else for that matter and you will find THERE IS NOT ONE SHRED of evidence proving this !

    • Dale

God made ETs as well. We’re all God’s children in this universe. These are just our space brothers and sisters trying to help us evolve peacefully.

  • RykeOden

During a time of global economic and environmental emergencies one has to ask why we are funding “Intelligent High-Tech Display Flares”.  Can the military not think of any other project that would be better invested? Do they need more land so they are not testing these “Intelligent High-Tech Display Flares” in heavily populated residential areas? Why are we sharing these “Intelligent High-Tech Display Flares” with Moscow, New Zealand, Japan.
Since these flares can hover and are capable of steering, will we be seeing a flare-powered automobiles in the future? Flare-powered airplanes? Flare-powered JDAM?
In my opinion anyone buying the story of ‘flares’ doesn’t have the mental capacity to see that we are not the only lifeforms in the universe, the same universe we have yet to see the other side, the same universe we have yet to explore.

HAHAHAH we are alone in the universe, ahhhh do you know how big the universe is, and have you ever looked into it?  It would be foolish and extremely self centered to say there was no life outside this planet. Did you know there have been asteroids and comets that have hit earth full of amino acids and proteins the building blocks for life? + our planet is only 4 billion years old, pretty new in th universes standers did you know you can make amino acids with a few natural and abundant gases with some water and some electricity.

Sorry buck life is out there

  • pharmakos

wow, lots off anger here. Amazing how a small story can get everyone mad. Let me clear up things with what I know. SOME ufo’s are very real. If there were sparks coming out the back of these things , they probably WERE pyrotechnics. Ufo’s do not spark. Burning charcoal does spark. ( I know because I have both seen UFO’s and I made pyrotechnics as a hobby)  More confusion is being caused by the fact that the Government covered up the march 13 phoenix lights with , guess what , flares. 8:00 a UFO flew over phoenix. 10:00 they dropped flares to create confusion. Apparently it worked .

  • Shotgun Slade

If I apologize to anyone, I do so to Cheryln and Cheryln ONLY. My apologies, Cheryln. I did not mean to direct my remarks toward you or your blog.

I direct my remarks at decades of I_ _ _ _S who are seriously OUT THERE when it comes to THEIR interpretation of UFO’s (not yours). Cheryln, you have a BRAIN and you use it! I greatly respect your opinions and will defend to THEIR DEATH… YOUR right to blog away!

The rest of you N_ _ _ _ S are certainly fearing ol’ Slade today! Sounds like I struck a nerve! Ha!

    • Shotgun Slade

      Cherlyn, that is! – Slade

  • Shotgun Slade

BTW, if I may impose on Cherlyn’s blog just a bit longer…

Those of you who prefer to believe in life “out there” and not God, the burden of proof falls on YOU. God doesn’t have to manifest Himself to every Tom, Dick, & Harriet “out there”, especially if they are UNbelievers!

You claim you believe in your interpretation of ”UFO’s”! PROVE IT! Yep, how about YOU prove to all of us that your interpretation(s) 0f UFO’s exist? And THEN prove to all of us that God DOESN’T exist!

Thanks for your tolerance, Cherlyn! – Slade OUT!

  • Jay

Seriously, the guys’ name is shotgun slade, enough said.  Religion is the cause of most problems/wars here on earth.  To think that any human, has enough knowledge to know anything beyond our own world is just ignorant. Think about how big the universe is, really.  All our beliefs have come from thousands of years, yes the universe has been around for billions..and there is evidence of that, so put that in your pipe and smoke it.

    • Jay

***yet*** the universe has been around for billions…

You can never disprove religious people, because its just “belief”, except..what do they argue when you say..i dunno… dinosaurs…  I didnt read about them in the bible.

    • Shotgun Slade

What evidence can anyone provide that the universe has been around for billions of years? Human scientists base much of what they “know” on human theories, surely you’re aware of that?

The whole UFO argument is based on “wow”… how big the universe is, and “wow”, how shiny and “real” those lights out there in the sky are… and “wow”, every galaxy has GOT to have another “earth” just like ours. Why don’t you guys learn to live with the earth you have? Why not make this earth a better one? Talk about ignorance…

Now… please tell me about your recent “abduction”, okay?

  • http://www.alienmoonbase.com Edwin

I really think that recently there have been actual UFO sightings and it’s possible that the US government’s trying to debunk them by actually setting off flares and having parachute exercise near the areas where real UFOs have been. But they are dickheads. The truth always surfaces and it will be VERY ugly for the liars. They were once worried about what we’d do if we knew about the aliens. I suspect they’re worried about what we will do to THEM for having lied so long.
