Astronomer claims to have detected alien signal from Gliese 581g

Monday, October 11th, 2010

The discovery of an unconfirmed extrasolar planet, dubbed Gliese 581g, was announced last month during a press briefing on September 29th.

Since that time, an Australian astronomer named Ragbir Bhathal claims to have detected a suspicious alien signal from the same area of the galaxy where Gliese 581g is located. He claims that he detected the signal two years ago. The astronomer, a scientist at the University of Western Sydney, is also a member of SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence).

The claim of the signal detected by Bhathal has drawn wide skepticism from scientists, despite the belief that Gliese 581g would likely be habitable.

During the press briefing in September, one scientist speculated the chances of life on this planet at 100%:

“Personally, given the ubiquity and propensity of life to flourish wherever it can, I would say, my own personal feeling is that the chances of life on this planet are 100 percent,” said Steven Vogt, a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. “I have almost no doubt about it.”

It remains to be seen if any possible life on the planet is intelligent and capable of sending signals from Gliese 581g. The planet is located 20 light years from Earth in the constellation Libra. Researchers have estimated that its mass is three to four times Earth’s. Researchers believe it is likely a rocky planet with enough gravity to hold on to an atmosphere.

Claim of Alien Signal from Planet Gliese 581g Called ‘Very Suspicious’

The recent discovery of Gliese 581g, an alien planet in the habitable zone of another star, has been an exciting development for scientists probing the galaxy for signs of extraterrestrial life. At least one claim of a possible signal from the planet has already surfaced – and been met with harsh skepticism among the science community.

Expert in China weighs in on aliens, UFOs and Voyager

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

In an interview published on xinhua.net on Tuesday, Zu Jin, the curator of Beijing Planetarium asserted that aliens do exist, but they haven’t yet come to our planet. He added that any planets in the universe similar to Earth would only have the capabilities of us Earthlings. Therefore, it would be impossible for an extraterrestrial to travel here.

As a result, he surmises that all UFO reports are merely ordinary earthly objects (kites, planes), and not objects from another galaxy. Those objects that remain unidentified are just that, but of an earthly origin.

Addressing also the Voyager 1, which I coincidentally wrote about on Monday, Zu Jin had something to say about that, too. He stated that the distance that the spacecraft has traveled on it’s 33-year journey only accounts for one-thousandth of the solar system’s reach. Taking this into consideration, it would take 10,000 years for human beings to visit planets outside the solar system.

The best way to find and communicate with aliens is to send radio signals, he added.

Of course, personally, I have a couple of problems with this argument, but will just address one.

I personally think that it assumes too much to think that Earthlings are the most advanced civilization in the entire universe. This argument assumes that other civilizations would only match the intelligence of that on Earth, because they live on a planet that can support life, like Earthlings.

This expert opinion does not take into account other civilizations that may be older and more intelligent than Earthlings. How old are these other planets in the universe that can support life, like Earth? Isn’t Earth relatively young in many instances?

Considering technological advancements on Earth, we have come a long way technologically. We are still making technological advances daily.

Suppose that these civilizations he refers to, like Earth, in a galaxy far away, are much, much older than Earth – and much, much more advanced technologically. Perhaps they figured out how to to do the impossible, like traveling warp speed to other galaxies or beaming themselves into different coordinates in the universe. Sounds impossible, and maybe it is. Maybe it isn’t.

Things we think are impossible today just may be possible tomorrow. Many advances in technology were initiated by thinking about how to make impossible, possible. Things that we thought to be impossible just a century ago are entirely possible today. Some of that awesome technology from a short time ago is extremely outdated today. Earthlings keep making advances and still we have a long way to go.

I wonder what happened to visionaries like Carl Sagan. Sagan acknowledged that the Voyager probes being encountered by travelers in an alien spaceship was extraordinarily slim. However, he was hopeful about that extraordinarily slim chance that it could happen somewhere between Earth and beyond.

Anyway, I think that the chance that Earth is the most intelligent civilization in the universe is extraordinarily slim. Especially if claiming that aliens do exist who would be similar to Earthlings.

Depending on the age of their civilization, their technological advancements could make us look like we still live in the stone age here on Earth.

Local Woman Hunts For UFOs Via Tucson City Web Cams

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

UFO enthusiasts live among us in the Old Pueblo. The more serious segment of that group usually arm themselves with video or digital cameras before leaving their homes in search of evidence. The proof they capture could be offered to the local media, or it might be posted online for the world to scrutinize. One local woman has put a unique spin on UFO hunting in Tucson. She conducts her searches without even leaving the house.

Sheila1Her name is Sheila Martin. Sheila spends an average of five hours a week on the Tucson user-controlled city cameras online, which she aims toward the skies. Evidence she captures is posted to her YouTube channel, which is beginning to gain a following. Sheila jokes that “Sheila” is “Aliens” spelled backwards, well, if you cut of the neck of the “h” in “Sheila.”

She began her YouTube UFO hobby quite by accident. One night, while checking on the progress of the construction via Stone Avenue webcam, she took control of it and aimed it toward the sky. She quickly saw unusual lights, which prompted her to combine the city cams with a free downloadable software application called YouCam. With YouCam, she can record and share what she sees on the city webcams. She readily admits that much of the video she captures via webcam could likely be earthly airplanes or helicopters. She invites experts to scrutinize her findings, noting the dates and times for possible comparison with weather, flight and space records. Although she has tried other controllable web cams outside of Tucson, she hasn’t found as much success as she has experienced in the Old Pueblo.

Martin is also interested in ghosts, and has participated in paranormal investigSheila2ations with a group based in Sierra Vista. Cryptozoology is also intriguing to her, as she occasionally ponders over the existence of her favorite monster, Nessie (The Loch Ness Monster). She is a paranormal enthusiast in general. She is also a normal 23 year-old who is currently contempating career and educational goals. Kitty cats are constant source of joy in her life. She lovingly refers to felines as “alien angels” from above. Martin is interested in so many things, she hasn’t yet decided what she wants to do with the rest of her life. Modeling is another hobby that occupies some of her time. This pretty woman has secured a multitude of professional modeling gigs, but at 5′ 5″, she has found that her height has presented a barrier to her desired supermodel status. Still, she keeps aiming high with everything she does, despite her “vertical” challenge that limits her in the modeling field.

In the meantime, Martin works, searches for aliens, and goes out on dates. When asked if her paranormal enthusiasm has put a limit on potential dates, she replied with wholehearted assurance that it most certainly has not.
