‘The Outer Limits’ celebrates anniversary of 1963 ABC debut

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Today is the anniversary of the premiere of The Outer Limits in 1963. This television series that premiered on ABC consisted of 49 episodes, and aired from 1963 to 1965. It was similar to the earlier The Twilight Zone, but with a focus on science fiction. It was revived for a time on Showtime and SyFy, when it was called the Sci-Fi Channel.

I did not see the original premiere of the series, but as a young girl in the 1970′s, I watched reruns. The Outer Limits, Twilight Zone, Star Trek, and Science Fiction Theatre were favorites of mine and “new” to me. Tucson summers were way too hot to go play outside, so I started watching these shows instead.

It was exciting to hear “The Control Voice” at the beginning of The Outer Limits: “There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical…”

It was originally to be called Please Stand By, but ABC rejected the title. The show would end up influencing Star Trek in many ways. First, monsters used on The Outer Limits were recycled and used on Star Trek. William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and James Doohan had appeared in episodes before winning their starring roles in Star Trek. Gene Rodenberry, the creator of Star Trek, hired several former Outer Limits staff members to work on the show.

This show influenced the science fiction genre in other ways, too. Much later, a writer named Harlan Ellison, who wrote for The Outer Limits, filed a lawsuit against James Cameron. Ellison contended that Cameron used his work from the show to inspire Terminator. Ellison was awarded money with the ending credits of The Terminator acknowledging “the works of Harlan Ellison”.

Reruns of these shows paved the way for my interest in a 1970′s television series starring Leonard Nimoy, called “In Search of…”, which i credit for actually igniting my interest in the paranormal. However, that’s another post for another time.

All 49 original episodes of The Outer Limits are available on Hulu, along with the revived, newer, episodes of the series. Perhaps if you have nothing else to do tonight, you can watch the premiere episode from 1963: “The Galaxy Being”.

Here’s the famous intro from that show:

‘Star Trek’ made NBC debut 44 years ago today in 1966

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Star Trek has been on my mind lately. Over the last week, many of my UFO, alien and alien technology discussions seem to evoke the series in one way or another. Additionally, William Shatner disclosed in an interview the other day that he believes in aliens, but not UFOs.

It doesn’t surprise me that Shatner believes in aliens.  Shatner’s Captain Kirk got to make out with the sexiest aliens in the universe during the series run. Certainly, those episodes made many male Trekkies extremely hopeful for the existence of female extraterrestrial life, too.

I realized that it was 44 years ago today that the show debuted on NBC. On September 8, 1966, television viewers climbed aboard the starship Enterprise, to boldly go where no man has gone before.

The opening line, “to boldly go where no man has gone before,” was taken almost verbatim from a US White House booklet on space produced after the Sputnik flight in 1957. – Wikipedia

If you are itching to watch the Star Trek intro in order to pay homage to one of the greatest shows in television history, I’ve included a version from YouTube.

SyFy announces upcoming series with Billy Ray Cyrus and son

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Syfy is still cranking out new shows to entertain paranormal enthusiasts. According to a press release, their latest series has just gone forward into development.

The new show is called “UFO: Unbelievably Freakin’ Obvious”, starring Billy Ray Cyrus and his son Trace.

Obviously, this new concept will involve Cyrus and son trekking across the country and down the back roads of the paranormal. On their journey, they will aim to take a skeptical look at conspiracy theories involving paranormal phenomena.

Trace Cyrus has long had a “keen interest” in the paranormal, while the elder Cyrus has always wanted explore paranormal phenomena further.

SyFy’s executive, Mark Stern, Vice President of original programming says of the show:

“Allegations of cover-up and conspiracy around unexplained phenomena has inspired heated debate for decades, and it will be interesting to see what truth Billy Ray and Trace may discover.”

So, the show’s pilot episode is scheduled to be shot in a few weeks. It is unknown if Billy Ray’s daughter Miley Cyrus (of Hannah Montana fame) will make any cameo appearances on the series. Obviously, if she did, this would draw a wide audience from the younger set.

Trace Cyrus draws attention of a different kind.

The heavily tattooed and pierced Trace Cyrus frequently receives not-so-kind words from everyone in Hollywood – from the Olson Twins to Perez Hilton. This is obviously because Cyrus frequently spits out not-so-kind words about everyone in Hollywood.

He has voiced opinions about folks like the Jonas Brothers (for being fake) and Ashley Tisdale (for being the worst person ever).

His rock band filed a lawsuit against him in July, so he was ripe for a new gig with the paranormal stuff anyway.

Appropriately, the pilot episode will be produced by Peacock Productions.

As someone who has been turned off by many of these shows (leading me to turn off the television most of the time), I am unbelievably freakin’ obvious about voicing my skepticism about this new show.
