The Flowing Wells Neighborhood Association and Community Coalition (FWNACC) will celebrate 17 years of remarkable accomplishments on Thursday, October 18, 2012.

The festivities coincide with the FWNACC monthly general meeting at 6 p.m. at the Ellie Towne Flowing Wells Community Center, 1660 W. Ruthrauff Road. Dr. Nic Clement, Superintendent of the Flowing Wells School District, will be the featured speaker.

The community center is just one of the projects that have grown from the efforts of local residents who banded together in 1995 to address common concerns about the safety and quality of life in their neighborhood. The Ellie Towne Flowing Wells Community Center, named for the dynamic leader of the coalition, is also the home of a health center, and the Flowing Wells Branch Library is located across the street from the community center.

Both Flowing Wells District Park and Curtis Park were developed in partnership with Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation to provide sports opportunities and outdoor enjoyment to local residents.

Sharon Bronson, Pima County Supervisor for District 3, has been a strong ally of FWNACC and has supported their efforts to add valuable amenities to the community. Building close working relationships with other partners, including the Flowing Wells Unified School District, social service agencies, faith-based entities, and the local government, has resulted in over $75 million in goods and services for the people that FWNACC serves.

The FWNACC has worked hard for over 17 years to make a real difference in the quality of life of its residents. You and a neighbor are welcome to join them for complimentary food and beverages as they celebrate the results of their efforts.

Nine of Pima County’s community centers and park buildings will be getting some repairs, improvements and general sprucing up, thanks to $1.5 million budgeted by the Board of Supervisors.

Repairs and improvements will be carried out at:

• Catalina Recreation Center
• Picture Rocks Community Center
• Ajo Community Center
• Drexel Heights Community Center
• Continental Community Center
• Agua Caliente Bunkhouse
• Robles Junction Community Center
• Thomas Jay (Littletown) Recreation Center
• Ellie Towne Flowing Wells Community Center

Pima County Facilities Management conducted a comprehensive review of all the County’s community centers with the Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Department to compile the list of recommended improvements.

The repairs and improvements range from adding two disabled-designated parking places at Continental Community Center to the installation of energy-efficient lighting at four of the centers and include, at various centers:

• Conversion from evaporative cooling to air conditioning
• Roof, ceiling, and floor repairs
• Restroom repairs and renovation
• Security lighting and new fire alarms
• Interior and exterior repainting
• New exterior signage
• Cracksealing and recoating parking lots, drives and walking paths

The work is expected to be completed by July 1, 2013.

Applications for Pima County after-school programs will be available for on-site completion and due Friday, July 13, at participating Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Department community centers.

Applications for the early fall Kids And Parent Playtime (KAPP) program at the community centers will be available for on-site completion and due Monday, July 30, through Friday, Aug. 3.  The KAPP program runs from Aug. 13 through Oct. 5.

Both programs are free, except for special events.  Because of the programs’ popularity, registration is by lottery.  The lottery will be held the week after the application deadline, and applicants will be notified of their status.

The after-school program at eight community centers is for children ages 5-13 and runs from the first day of school until the holiday break in December.  Five-year-olds must be enrolled in elementary school.  Activities include homework help, reading program, group games, sports, arts and crafts, board and table games and special events.

Days and times vary by center.  The program will run from school dismissal until 6 p.m. at most locations.  Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation facilities are not licensed child-care facilities.  The school-age youth programs are “at will” drop-in programs, and youth enrolled in the programs may come and go of their own volition.

The KAPP program is for children ages 3-5 who are toilet-trained and their parent/s.  A variety of activities are offered such as arts and crafts, music, story time, nutrition education, early learning skills, socialization, sports skills and active games.  Days and times vary by center.  Parent must accompany the child and remain on premises during the entire program.  Please contact the participating community centers for more information or go to http://www.pima.gov/nrpr/tots/index.htm.

The public is invited to the grand opening of MHC Healthcare’s medical and dental clinic at 1670 W. Ruthrauff Road, next to Pima County’s Ellie Towne Flowing Wells Community Center, from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29.

Pima County is partnering with MHC Healthcare to improve access to affordable health services in the Flowing Wells community.

MHC Healthcare is offering medical and dental services at the clinic from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.  A family nurse practitioner provides family practice and women’s health services; and a dentist and dental hygienist see dental patients.  For an appointment, please call 520-616-6797.

MHC Healthcare has been providing health services in Pima County since 1957.  It is a nonprofit, federally qualified health center, where “no one is turned away based on their ability to pay.”

MHC Healthcare recently opened a flagship clinic at 13395 N. Marana Main St., and has a growing network of 14 satellite locations in Pima County.  It also partners with schools and local governments and organizations to deliver health services, especially to the underserved and uninsured, across Pima County.
