Business representatives who work with hazardous materials are invited to a free education seminar Wednesday, Jan. 30, to learn more about how to comply with new and updated federal and state public safety requirements.

The fourth annual Local Emergency Planning Committee Business Education Seminar will offer a full day of discussions and lectures to help business owners learn about best practices.

Representatives from agencies, such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, will be on hand to answer questions and walk business owners through the process.

“We’ve had great feedback on this program in the past because business leaders are able to get important information straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak,” said John Wisner, a program coordinator with the Pima County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security.

“Instead of having to work through some of these complex requirements on the phone, they can establish relationships and make sure they have a better understanding of some of the compliance issues they’ll need to follow to protect the public and their employees,” he said.

Local government officials and fire department personnel responsible for hazardous materials compliance are also invited to attend, as are media representatives. The event takes place from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Desert Diamond Casino,7350 S. Nogales Highway.

All costs associated with the seminar are covered by a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
