Destroyed playground structure at Star Valley Park
Pima County, Arizona – Vandals torched a playground structure at a Pima County park on Tucson’s southwest side over the weekend, and county officials are not sure when funds will be available to replace it.
The structure at Star Valley Park, 6852 W. Brightwater Way, southwest of West Valencia Road and South Camino Verde, is a total loss with an estimated replacement value of $15,000-$20,000. County officials are planning to remove the structure from the park as soon as possible.

“We had a similar incident at this park in June when someone burnt up the slide,” said George Kuck, operations maintenance manager for the Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Department. “There also have been several incidents at this park where the restroom garbage pail was set on fire.”
According to county records, nine other incidents of graffiti, fires and other destruction have occurred at the park since October, with repair costs exceeding $2,500.
“The rate and severity of vandalism at our parks continues to mount,” said Rafael Payan, director of the county parks department. “We are investigating further and I will have more info as it develops, including our course of action.”
