A native of California, Diane Given Hayes moved to the Caribbean in 1987 and then moved to Sierra Vista in July 2012. A self-trained artist, Hayes selects subjects from a wide variety of topics – from cactus to polar bears. Her most recent series”Nature’s Watchful Eye” expresses environmental issues and concerns reflected in the eyes of the subject. In her large paintingof the endangered Harlequin Poison Dart Frog,at first glance a viewer sees a stunning bold image of yellow, red, and black.Upon closer look, in the eye of the frog is another image – thewater habitatinEcuadorianand Colombian rain forests.
“Amphibians are experiencing horrific worldwide declines and extinctions due to pesticide run off and habitat destruction,” said Hayes. “Presenting this issue in the eye of my subject is a heartfelt way to express concerns for the environment while showing the beauty of what might be lost.” There are currently 9 paintings in the “Nature’s Watchful Eye” series. These will be part of the works carried by 55 Main Gallery in Bisbee, Arizona.
