There are a lot of great Tucson bands performing original music and excelling in creative innovation. There is a lot of talented singers, gifted songwriters and worthwhile musicians. However, one thing that keeps Tucson’s scene off the map is that so many bands settle on mediocrity in their releases and promotion. It is the curse of the “good-enough” mentality in Tucson. That is why Ex-Cowboy spent over a year working on their debut 10-song, self-titled album after more than 5 years of the band’s existence.
Created by Michael Huerta here in Tucson, Ex-Cowboy is the summation of diverse influences ranging from scary stories to Appalachian folk music. Ex-Cowboy somehow blends a balance of dark overtones and alluring sensitivities all within a western setting. The band has a rotating cast of people with instrumentation including accordion, violin, cello, double bass, guitar, drums and even bass clarinet.
Their self-titled album is set to be released on Feb 27th, 2013 on Diet Pop Records at La Cocina. It was recorded by Petie Rondstat at LandMark Sound Recorders and produced by Logan Greene. Diet Pop Records is a new label created by Logan Greene to highlight some of the hidden gems of Tucson music.
“…dark Appalachian folk songs, heavy on gloomy textures and high and lonesome Spaghetti Western soundtrack guitar … extraordinary and mysterious.”
