La Paloma Academy Invites Tucson Community to Run/Walk/Roll
March 16 event promotes physical activity, benefits school technology
Tucson, AZ (02/06/13) – La Paloma Academy, Tucson’s largest and fastest-growing charter school system, proudly announces the inaugural La Paloma Academy Run/Walk/Roll for Education. This event will take place on Saturday, March 16, at Reid Park with activities for all levels of participation and is open to the public. La Paloma Run/Walk/Roll features a 4-mile bicycle race, a 5k fun run/walk/roll, and a kindergarten and under walk. Special guest speakers will attend and the event will include awards, games and food. Registration begins at 9:45 a.m.
“All three Tucson campuses of La Paloma Academy are committed to providing our students with a well-rounded education,” said La Paloma Academy Director Raena Janes. “Not only does a well-rounded education include classwork and community service, but physical activity as well. It’s all too easy these days for children to opt out of participating in physical activity, with the proliferation of video games, hundreds of TV channels and such. This is a fun, family event that everyone can enjoy in the great surroundings of Reid Park.
“According to a study by the University of Illinois, physical activity can increase a child’s ability to pay attention and learn*,” Janes added. “Even participating in a low-impact activity such as walking showed improvement in students’ ability to pay attention in class and learn. The study, which was published last year, concluded that the better fit a student is, the better the student can perform in school.”
Students at all three campuses – Central, Lakeside and South – have already begun preparing for the Run/Walk/Roll by collecting pledges. Not only can the students win great prizes by receiving the most pledges, they can also earn their own entry fee.
As with all fundraisers at La Paloma Academy this year, proceeds from the La Paloma Run/Walk/Roll will help each campus meet the needs of the 21st century learner. The school has received support from community businesses and vendors, such as Login, Inc.
“We want to make sure our students and teachers have all the necessary tools to learn, teach and succeed in the classroom – from sufficient computers to interactive whiteboards,” Janes said.
