The Next Step in The Game of Life: Girl Scout Leadership Institute 2013
Tucson- Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona will be presenting the Girl Scout Leadership Institute(GSLI)for girls in 7th-12th grade on March 16, 2013. The GSLI will serve as a leadership conference for girls who have demonstrated leadership in their schools and have a desire to connect with other girls and take action to make the world a better place. Girls will work together in interactive workshops and attend presentations by inspiring female leaders in our community.
The theme of the Girl Scout Leadership Institute is “The Next Step in The Game of Life,” which speaks to girls taking the first step towards setting and attaining life goals. The focus areas include learning how to dress for a professional workplace, how to apply for college, navigating in a digital world, stress reduction and prevention and career exploration. Girls can answer essay questions on the registration form to receive scholarship opportunities. Participants will also be paired with a mentor that will help guide them through high school and prepare them for their future endeavors.
Registration is free for this event and promises to be educational and useful for the girl leaders of tomorrow. Girls will receive a cardigan to wear for interviews and a goody bag along with multiple beneficial resources. According to the Girl Scout Research Institute’s Girl Survey Panel “Nearly two-thirds of girls believe they have to work harder than boys in order to gain positions of leadership. Of those girls, 49% says that it bothers them and they care enough to do something to change it.” This applies to the importance of creating opportunities like the GSLI for girls to gain the tools necessary to grow and succeed to today’s world.
Facilitator Kristi Pallack says, “The most exciting part of the GSLI is that it is being planned by a team of high school girls for other girls, so it is all focused around topics that girls think are important. They are learning how to make the world a better place in a safe environment that lets them try new things.” Pallack continued, “We can encourage girls to think big about their future and move girls into a better tomorrow. It can all start here.”
