TUCSON, Arizona, Oct. 4, 2013 – The Southern Arizona Logistics Education Organization (SALEO) has awarded 11 scholarships of $1,000 each to outstanding students for post-secondary study in the coming spring semester. SALEO has provided $34,000 in scholarships over the past three years.
Six of the recipients are attending Pima Community College: Nicole L. Foster, Carmelo F. Padilla (Flowing Wells HS), Christopher Jordan, Emily S. Dreier, Daniel M. Preston, and Samuel Weltjen. Attending the University of Arizona are Alexa Marisa Raptis, Aaron C. Varela and Hayden N. Garber. Nathan A. Mack is pursuing studies at Northern Arizona University. Leo R. Khawam is a student at Arizona State University. Two are recent high school graduates, Padilla from Flowing Wells High School and Garber from University High.
SALEO’s annual scholarship tournament and donations fund the scholarships. The 2013 tournament’s title sponsor was The Port of Tucson (http://www.portoftucson.com/), which offers businesses access to rail and intermodal container transportation as well as warehousing. Scholarship Boosters donating this year are HDS Companies, The ILS Company, and Pima County One Stop, which offers workforce development services. HDS provides services to the truck driving industry. The ILS Company offers complete cross-border supply chain management solutions (http://www.ilscompany.com/); it is headquartered in Tucson and has facilities in Mexico at Hermosillo, Guaymas and Empalme.
Tournament sponsors this year also included: Union Pacific Railroad, DHL Global Forwarding, APL, J&L Transportation, Tucson Airport Authority, Mode Transportation, Valencia International and Altuna Logistics International.
SALEO is a non-profit that works through education, networking, and workforce development and offers a forum for logistics providers and users to share information about the latest issues affecting transportation and logistics. SALEO will accept applications for next year’s scholarships beginning January 15, 2014.
