Ziehl, Ayers, Jones, Stehr Winners at USA Raceway

Rick Ziehl Flying on the Wings of Rick Sipes

(Keith Ames)  Rick Ziehl completed a personal first by winning the third of three consecutive ASCS races this past Saturday at USA Raceway in Tucson.   It was a special evening as the Ziehl team paid a tribute to Rick Sipes who unexpectantly passed away early Friday morning.  Ziehl chose to remove his top wing and replaced it with the wing from Sipes # 1 “Green Machine” in honor of the accomplished Tucson Racer who would run the wheels off any race car he drove.  He rode to victory on the Wing of his good friend Rick Sipes in the Sunoco Fuel ASCS Southwest Region this Saturday at the 3/8-mile USA Raceway clay oval.   The Ziehls’ are a class act.

Ziehl was followed to the checkers by Calvin Landis who has moved within 50 points of John Carney II who finished in the 6th slot.  Joshua Hodges, Dalten Gabbard and Perry McMillan rounding out the top five.  Sunoco Fuel ASCS Southwest Region Feature Results from USA Raceway:

Chad Ayers recorded back to back wins with the victory in the USRA Modified this past Saturday.  Ayers was followed to the checkers by Cody Alvarez, Brian Clark, Mike Brandon and Dane Jorgenson.

Dustin Jones was a convincing winner as he posted his 1st win in the exciting and competitive Factory Stock Division.  Terry Churchwell has extended his points lead with a very strong 2nd place finish.  Dylan Newberry, Jason Pugliese and Kevin Souligne finished 3rd, 4th and 5th.

This week Dwarf Cars as always, put on a very competitive and exciting race and came to USA Raceway with a full field of cars.  This week Brian Stehr grabbed the 1st place trophy.  He was followed to the stripe by Ryan Irish in second, Ryan Henesey, Eddie O’Neill and Daniel Lamm were all in the hunt for the win and finished third, fourth and fifth.

July 2nd and July 3rd will Feature the Sunoco Fuel ASCS Canyon Region Non Wing Sprint Cars billed as the Firecracker 40.  Both Saturday and Sunday the traveling Western States Stock Car Series, the X-Mods and the Southwest Mod Lites will join the sprint cars for two exciting nights of competitive racing.

General admission tickets will go on sale for only $15 for Adults, $12 for Seniors, Students and Military and racing will begin promptly at 6:45pm. USA Raceway Unveils the Western World Qualifying Nights

 The excitement continues to build with only a few days remaining before the best sprint cars drivers in the world converge on Tucson’s USA Raceway to kickoff the 43rd Annual KRONIK Energy Drinks Western World Championships.

 
With more than 100 entries from 15 states already filed for the event set for November 18th-20th at Tucson’s USA Raceway, The qualifying nights have been determined.
 
The stellar field, including eight former Western World champions and numerous track and series champions from throughout the country, has been split into two nights.  The Lucas Oil National ASCS Sprint Car contenders and the ASCS wingless warriors will be split with half of each field running on Thursday night and the other half on Friday night.  The top eight national finishers from each night’s main events will be locked into Saturday night’s $15k to win championship feature while the top seven from each night’s ASCS Canyon Region features will make up the first seven rows of the $5k to win wingless championship feature.  The balance of Saturday’s feature lineups will be determined by qualifying night finishing positions.

Thursday November 18th – The Parker Store Qualifying Night

Thursday kicks off the week in grand style as Lucas Oil ASCS National defending champion Shane Stewart and ASCS Canyon Region defending champion “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. take to the track.  Stewart will be in tough competition with three time and defending Western World Champion Sammy Swindell, and four time World of Outlaw Champion Donny Schatz among the Lucas Oil ASCS National qualifiers. 

Davis will head up the wingless qualifiers with some heavy hitters that include 2-Time Western World Champion Bud Kaeding, USAC National Champion Levi Jones and Indiana’s “The Throttle” Shane Cottle.

Friday November 19th – The Kronik Energy Drinks Qualifying Night

Friday night Jason Johnson, Lucas Oil ASCS Point Leader, will try to gain ground on Brady Bacon as he quests to win his first championship as a car owner/driver.  With only 72 points separating the two drivers, Johnson will have tough work ahead as he takes on Danny Lasoski, Joey Saldana and Southwest Region point leader Rick Ziehl.

Defending non wing champion Brady Bacon will join Oval Nationals Champion Chris Windom and “The King of Indiana” Jon Stanbrough to take on former Western World Champions Jeremy Sherman and Kevin Swindell in wingless action

Tennessee’s Sammy Swindell became the 26th different winner of the Western World by topping the 2009 edition of the event last November marking his third triumph while Oklahoma’s Brady Bacon etched his name in the record books by winning the wingless portion of the event.
Steve Kinser has claimed the most Western World titles with seven triumphs including wingless wins in 1982 and 1983 followed by winged wins in 1985, 1987, 1990, 1992 and 1996.

Ron Shuman is next on the list with five Western World triumphs, all of the wingless variety, with other drivers posting multiple Western World wins including Lealand McSpadden (3), Sammy Swindell (3), Bud Kaeding (2), Mark Kinser (2) and Jan Opperman (2).

Stormy Scott Sails to UMP Modified Victory at USA Raceway

Stormy Scott with Another 1st Place Finish!

Stormy Scott made it back to back wins for New Mexico racers as he captured the 25-Lap Barnett Harley Davidson UMP West Modified feature joining July 10th winner Jimmy Ray with his second triumph of 2010 at Tucson’s USA Raceway.

Scott trailed early leader Robert Adams as he used a late race slide job to take the point and was able to hold Adams off for the final laps as he garnered the 1st place trophy and the $1000 cash that comes with it.

Adams, making his 2010 debut, was able to bring home a runner up finish with point leader RC Whitwell, who drove from seventeenth after earlier mechanical problems, filling the final podium position.  Dane Jorgenson held off Paul Banghart rounding out the top five.

Lonnie Foss moved within 6 points of Championship leader Dwayne Hogan by taking his second 20-Lap UniFirst Super Stock victory.  Foss took the point from third place finisher John Buerger and held off Dana Boatwright who settled for second.

Isaac Zaragoza continued his terror as well as his chances to secure a 2010 title.  Zaragoza made it three in a row by beating defending champion Dusty Gauthier and Robert Burchett to the stripe earning him his third 20-Lap Factory Stock win.

Jerry Jones and Stephen Lee took top spots in RWD Hornet and FWD Hornet action respectively.
