(Terry Shaw photo)

(Keith Ames) Tucson’s USA Raceway shifts back to the winged Sprint Car ranks this weekend as the Sunoco Fuel ASCS Southwest Region takes to the 3/8-mile clay oval this Saturday night. The Las Cruces, NM, hot shoe Rick Ziehl will be gunning for a third consecutive series win which would mark the first time in his 20 plus year career, to win three ASCS Southwest events in a row.

With his back to back wins as of late, Ziehl has extended his advantage in the Southwest championship points chase to 55 points over El Paso’s John Carney II. Knoxville transplant Calvin Landis currently sits in 3rd but only by a slim 5 point advantage over Alamogordo’s Kyle McCutcheon. The lone Arizonian, Joshua Williams of Glendale rounds out the top five going into Saturday night’s battle just 23 points behind 3rd place currently held by teammate Calvin Landis.

The remaining top ten includes Lance Norick of Scottsdale, Dalten Gabbard of Phoenix, Joshua Hodges of Tijeras, NMN, Steve Stone of Mesa, and Joey Chester of Phoenix.

In addition to the ASCS Wing Sprints, the wheelie kings of the USRA Modifieds Series will be onhand to battle it out at Arizona’s premier dirt track joined by the Factory Stocks and Dwarf Car divisions.

The always exciting USRA Modifieds will also feature many of the top drivers including point leader Tucson’s own Chad Ayers who with the win on June 11th has extended his points lead to 28 points over hard charging Cody Alvarez. Rounding out the top five slots is the Tucson Racing Legend and icon, Carl Trimmer, young hot shoe Rick Spencer and seasoned vet Dana Fite. Former UMP and IMCA Modified Champion Mark Harrison is in sixth and looking to climb the points ladder. Brian Clark had a very strong second place finish in the last outing as did Corey Hosler Jr and Jake O’Neil who finished third and fourth at the last Modified event at USA.

Terry Churchwell remains the point leader even though last week the “Buckle em up and Drive the Wheels off em” former Champion, Art Lacy found his way back to victory lane the. Mechanical problems dropped Ron Bishop to third while “Hillbiilly” Bob Burchett charged into the second points position. George Lein is in fourth and with a second place finish last week, Dylan Newberg has moved into the top five in the action packed Factory Stock Division.

Saturday’s Sunoco Fuel ASCS Southwest Region action at USA Raceway is slated to go green at 6:45 p.m.

General admission tickets will go on sale for only $15 for Adults, $12 for Seniors, Students and Military and racing will begin promptly at 6:45pm. Race fans for an additional $5 you my upgrade your ticket to the great indoors and enjoy the races from USA Raceway’s VIP Suite. First come, first serve basis to the first 80 customers)

Kevin Montgomery, TUCSON, Ariz. (October 21st, 2010) – Oklahoma’s Brady Bacon was one of 12 drivers to do double duty in last years edition of the KRONIK Energy Western World Championships and topped the charts by sweeping the non wing portion of the event and posting a 14th place finish in National Wing competition.

Bacon, who currently sits second in the ASCS National point standings, will make his way to Tucson to defend his Western World title but will also have his sights set on the $15,000 winner share of the ASCS National wing portion of the event adding to his chance of catching current point leader “The Ragin’ Cajun”, Jason Johnson.

Both Bacon and Johnson will continue the hard fought battle as they lead the ASCS National Dirt Sprint Car Series to the battle grounds of Tucson’s USA Raceway. Close to one hundred and fifty top Sprint Car teams from around the country are expected to migrate to warmer climates for their final chance at a big payday and another opportunity to add their name to prestigious list of winners.

Both the winged and wingless forces will tackle USA Raceway’s 3/8-mile clay oval for three nights on November 18th, 19th and 20th, with more than $100,000 in “A” Feature money alone distributed over the course of the blockbuster event. A $15,000 share awaits the winner of the KRONIK Energy Western World Champion, while the ASCS Canyon Region conqueror will pocket $5,000.

Kevin Montgomery TUCSON, Ariz. (October 8th, 2010) Wes Hurst Memorial 2009 Modified Champion Jeremy Payne will be at the wheel of the EDG Fuels Super Late Model for the 2nd Annual Carl Trimmer Classic joining 2009 USA Modified Champion RC Whitwell in team cars as the set out to take on the best in the southwest at USA Raceway.

A Tucson native, Payne returned home in the winter months to collect a $15k payday and become the 2009 Wes Hurst Memorial Modified Champion as well as a runner up finisher at the January Bill Cheesbourg Memorial Wild West Shootout finale where he pocketed $5k for his efforts.

Whitwell, who won the 2009 Friday prelim of the first edition of the classic, will be teammates with Payne for the season ending double header. Whitwell will try to wrap up another USA Modified Championship this weekend and then set his sights on the Carl Trimmer Classic.

The 2nd Annual Carl Trimmer Classic kicks off Friday October 15th as we honor one of Tucson’s greatest racers. Trimmer currently ranks in the top 5 in Barnett Harley Davidson Modified points standings at USA Raceway and is a force to reckon with on a weekly basis.

A storied career that has lasted more than fifty years and has no signs of concluding anytime soon, finds Trimmer still hard at the wheel and more determined than ever. Trimmer has racked up more than 700 feature wins and 34 championships including many NASCAR titles as well as the inaugural championships at the famed Corona Speedway and USA Raceway.

“Carl Trimmer is an amazing person on top of being a great racer” commented Benji Lyons. “He has the passion, drive and determination of a 25 year old and is a great inspiration to me and anyone that comes to the track.”

The 2nd Annual Carl Trimmer Classic will feature the stars of the Super Late Models from all over the Southwest. Several drivers from California, New Mexico and Colorado will make their way south to take on Arizona’s best.

The UniFirst Super Stocks will be in action along with Factory Stocks, X-Mods and Hornets as each division will crown champions on the Saturday night finale. All divisions will compete in two separate events starting with Friday night action and concluding with Saturday’s Carl Trimmer conclusion.

There will be an opportunity for race fans to get a preview of the Carl Trimmer Classic racers at an open practice slated for October 14th. The festivities will kick off at 6:00pm with grandstand admission free for all those who want a sneak preview.
