The Kids are All Right but the movie is irritating

by on Aug. 09, 2010, under Life

I heard the Oscar buzz, saw the previews, watched local lesbian groups like Meander in Tucson organizing a girls night out, and I love Annette Bening. So my partner and I decided to make a “date night” out of it and see the movie and go to dinner. Thank goodness dinner wasn’t a bust because the movie left us with indigestion.

I’ll admit it; I’m a sucker for a lesbian movie. They are few and far between. Nowadays, producers and directors are even offering us gay and lesbian movies where the gays and lesbians don’t either die, leave their gay/lesbian lifestyle to go back to the other side, or kill someone and end up in jail. And although The Kids are All Right didn’t do any of these things, it left me with the same kind of feeling, disappointment.

Now, I realize that any movie about a family and their daily lives might be boring and you might have to spice it up to keep the audience from falling asleep. But for most lesbians, the spice Lisa Cholodenko put in this movie was only something that spoiled the dish. After about her fourth harrumph, my partner turned to me and mentioned she had had enough. The movie wasn’t half over. I won’t spoil the story but suffice it to say, my take on it was that lesbians are missing out on sex with a man. When Julianne Moore swoons over a penis, the only noise from the audience was not coming from the lesbians.

The last good lesbian movie I saw was Imagine Me and You with Piper Perabo and Lena Headley, the two gorgeous women who played the leads. If you haven’t seen it, get the DVD and invite a bunch of your friends over. The story is charming, actors are polished and you don’t have to sit through scenes where lesbians go to bed with their children’s sperm donor and act like it’s everything that’s missing in their lives. OOPS, sorry I spoiled it.

I’m still waiting, albeit not patiently, for the next good lesbian movie. It wasn’t The Kids are All Right.

Thanks for this review Pam.  I saw the preview of this movie, and figured it would end that way.  I did like Imagine You & me , which was a more authentic movie.

Peg, you’re right, the Kids are All  Right in the movie, which I just saw for $.150 at Crossroads Theater.  I liked it more than  thought I would as it was also a coming of age movie for the college bound daughter, and a movie about partner commitment, betrayal, remorse, etc. after the affair.  I wish someday that  lesbian actresses would act in lesbian roles, as seeing these two straight famous women pretend to be gay wasn’t authentic.  Actor Mark Ruffalo did a good job as a non-committal interloper. And there is a happy ending since the couple apparently stays together, with their family of 2 children.
