Hey Tyler: One of the perks of being a Reserve Cop for Anaheim P.D. was being able to work security at all the Rock and other Concerts held at Anaheim Stadium back in the 1970's-80's.
I made sure that I got back stage detail when the Stones showed up for their Saturday afternoon gig, and I was amazed at how short they all were. Billy Barty would have fit right in with that group. About 5' 5" was the average.
Naturally they were shielded away from us 'defenders of law and order,' but they put on one hell of a show. They arrived in a limo about 20 minutes before they went on with more guards than we had cops, did their thing, did one curtain call, and left, exit stage left, very business-like, not unlike Elvis.
I think we had about 60, 000 thrill seekers show up for that show.
But the Concert that I really remember was the Beach Boys/Chicago gig when they had to shut down the Beach Boys half way thru 'Good Vibrations.'
Seems like everyone in the stands, (and they were packed) was jumping up-and-down in unison to the music, and the whole grandstand was moving at least 3 feet up and down. I was down on the field, and was wondering if the heavy pot smoke that was like a thick fog was affecting my senses. Or was it those tabs that I had confiscated at the gate before the concert. <g>
It doesn't take an Einstein to figure out that I signed up for every concert that hit town. Rock, Country, Rock-A-Billy, Cajun, Punk, Iggy Pop, Eurotrash Industrial, you name it, they all gave me a chance to meet and greet different segments of the population that I would come in contact with in the future.
I always drove my VW camper to the concerts, and took the early shift, so I could get off-duty early enough to get back to the camper and have enough time to change clothes and become a thrill seeker myself for the final hour or so of the show.
It was like having the best of both worlds. Thumping heads in the morning (easy Lefty,) and partying until you drop in the evening with a bunch of crazy new friends that you just met.
Life was good. Yer pal, Ferrari Bubba
