Growing up:
25¢ burgers and 10¢ fries @ McDonalds
1¢ candy, candy necklaces and candy on a paper strip @ the corner store
Sampling a new soft drink from a trailer in the supermarket parking lot, called Mountain Dew, and thinking “Wow, that looks like ….”
Even the junk food was better 50 years ago. ‘^)

Ah donuts…subversive balls of dough that make me feel more guilty and not as satisfied as eating some other sweet treats. I grew up in a Midwest steel town and remember eating La Roy’s donuts. We didn’t get them too often but when we did — oh my. I can almost still taste the chocolate cake donut with the cream filling (not that chemical stuff they put it in now) with dark chocolate icing. If 5 donut holes were 300 calories I shudder to think how many calories was in that donut.

I’m wondering how I too can get a job at the Citizen – your sophomoric grammatical and sentence-structure errors lend themselves to an “Average Joe” such as myself being able to write circles around you.

And, before Dunkin Donuts, came the waffle wagon, right down your urban street. Ah, the marvelous smell of frying dough and syrup! What I wouldn’t give for a repeat of that experience; but, alas, gone – all gone.

Ah, happy food. There is no greater donut story than was told by Robert McCloskey about young Homer Price: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homer_Price. Besides being a fun story, among many in the book it is also a great introduction to genuinely good writing about a bygone era in this country. Thank you for the reminder about some of the wonderful culinary history of this nation.
