Rosie On The House - advice and information for the do-it-yourselfer

Hey, y’all! My name is Rosie, and today I’m starting my home-improvement blog.

Anyone who lives in our beautiful state has bragging rights to everlasting sunshine and nearly endless summers. We also know that our dry, hot weather presents us with some unique challenges as homeowners.

Here's a shot of my son and co-host, Romey (left), and me doing the the Rosie on the House Show on the radio.

I have a goal to help my Arizona friends and neighbors help themselves when it comes to living comfortably in homes that they love. I hail from Louisiana, but I’ve been an Arizonian since I moved here as a teenager. I’ve worked in the home improvement industry since 1972, and in 1989, I started hosting a radio talk show so I could help more people turn their houses, cabins and condos into their own private castles.

My radio show, called Rosie on the House like my blog, is on KNST every Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.

Starting today, this blog will appear regularly on Tucson Citizen.com. In my blog, I’ll write about all kinds of home improvement solutions, with a focus on the ones that present special challenges to us because of our unique climate.

I’ll spend the rest of this week blogging about easy, inexpensive ways you can create a simple home theater for your family to enjoy while y’all are cooped up inside because it’s too hot to go outside. That’s also the topic of my show this Saturday.

In the coming weeks, look for tips about painting and other home improvements. Plus, I’d like to write about the home improvement issues that are on your mind. So post your questions and comments here for me so I can get to know you!

’Til next time, pass yourself a good dose of joie de vivre!

Fill me in on termites and if I really need to spend $500 protecting my home from them.

Oo ye yi, Ryn! I hope you don’t have termites! They’re nothing to fool around with.

Sorry to say, $500 is probably on the low side for what you’ll lay out to get rid of them if you live in an average-size house. The good news is that many pest-control companies will come out and give you an estimate for free, so you’ll know exactly what you’re looking at before you make the commitment to have the work done. (Here’s one that will.)

Now, if you’re just asking if you should put up the dough to prevent termites even though you don’t have any reason to believe you have them, I’d say you’d be better off savin’ it for a rainy day. A lot of pest-control companies charge big bucks for termite prevention/warranty services, but the problem is: The treatments aren’t permanent. Treat your bugs if you have ‘em, but don’t spend money on a warranty program.

Thanks for being the first one to post a question on my new blog, Ryn!

Rosie – Thank YOU! for your prompt and helpful response.
My termite question, thankfully, falls into the prevention category and yes, I was hesitant to shell out the $500 for treatment. And now I won’t and can go buy new shoes instead (haha).
I, too, hope I don’t get those critters but will know they are nothing to mess around with.
Thanks and I enjoy your blog already!

Dear Rosie: Welcome aboard! I look forward to reading and learning, especially about the home theater. Cheers from your virtual neighbor, Geoff (Logical Lizard).

We’ve been thinking about building a doghouse out in the backyard. At the least we would want to lay a concrete slab but we are at a loss as to whether to go with frame and stucco,  frame and plywood,  or super deluxe slump block. And what about the roof?  In any case,  a simple yet reliable window airconditioner would be desireable, or what do you think of an underground doghouse with a dehumidifier?  We’ve asked contractors about all this and they say, “We’ll do whatever you want!”  Surprise,  surprise.  Cost is no object. As matters stand, the specific dog in question mostly sleeps in the human house under the kitchen table.
