We've been thinking about building a doghouse out in the backyard. At the least we would want to lay a concrete slab but we are at a loss as to whether to go with frame and stucco, frame and plywood, or super deluxe slump block. And what about the roof? In any case, a simple yet reliable window airconditioner would be desireable, or what do you think of an underground doghouse with a dehumidifier? We've asked contractors about all this and they say, "We'll do whatever you want!" Surprise, surprise. Cost is no object. As matters stand, the specific dog in question mostly sleeps in the human house under the kitchen table.
Please advise...

Rosie - Thank YOU! for your prompt and helpful response.
My termite question, thankfully, falls into the prevention category and yes, I was hesitant to shell out the $500 for treatment. And now I won't and can go buy new shoes instead (haha).
I, too, hope I don't get those critters but will know they are nothing to mess around with.
Thanks and I enjoy your blog already!
ryn.

Oo ye yi, Ryn! I hope you don't have termites! They're nothing to fool around with.

Sorry to say, $500 is probably on the low side for what you'll lay out to get rid of them if you live in an average-size house. The good news is that many pest-control companies will come out and give you an estimate for free, so you'll know exactly what you're looking at before you make the commitment to have the work done. (Here's one that will.)

Now, if you're just asking if you should put up the dough to prevent termites even though you don't have any reason to believe you have them, I'd say you'd be better off savin' it for a rainy day. A lot of pest-control companies charge big bucks for termite prevention/warranty services, but the problem is: The treatments aren't permanent. Treat your bugs if you have 'em, but don't spend money on a warranty program.

Thanks for being the first one to post a question on my new blog, Ryn!
