Claws that will kill you

Cat claws are known for their power to maim, rip drapes and scratch out eyeballs. But anyone who thinks this power is limited to our feline friends hasn’t met my dog Phoebe.
paws
She’s a shepherd mix with an extreme aversion to anyone touching her paws. She’d rather limp than let me pull a thorn out of her foot. Her claws have thus gotten long and sharp enough for me to need minor surgery any time she jumps at my stomach when it’s time to go for a “W-A-L-K.”

I tried PediPaws, which is supposed to be this miraculous and painless battery-operated rotary filing tool, but she won’t let it come within 22 feet of her. I even followed the PediPaws directions and offered treats while I introduced my dogs the tool, but it still didn’t work.

Phoebe ran 22 feet away and Sawyer ate all the treats.

Yes, I know, I have to take her to get her nails clipped. Where’s a good place to go? Or any tips on clipping Phoebe’s nails without giving her a heart attack?

What aversions do your pets have?

How to you overcome them?

What “miraculous” tools or toys have you gotten for your pets?

P.S. The FURmintor rocks.

Ryn, simply give in. You’re not the boss.

I had a cat like Phoebe. Any attempt to clip his nails left me a bloodied mess. I finally gave up and accepted the fact that this was his place, not mine.

He died a month ago at age 16, and now – pet free, for the first time in 50 years – I’m thinking of getting some new furniture.

Our beloved James, a Doberman/Shepherd mix, was that way when she was first adopted. She would shriek bloody murder if we tried to get near her feet. We solved it over time by having Vicki sing to her on the bed while I gently touched her feet. After a while we could check her feet, and trim her nails.

    Thanks for the input…

Coachh – now is definitely indulge in new furniture, fur throws, light colored rugs, dangling artwork and all other stuff that’s not possible with curious pets. Either that, or get a new cat!

Bruce – I love the singing idea. Only thing, Phoebe runs 22 feet away when I start singing, too – haha.

Dogs are generally averse to having their nails trimmed unless the process of training them to accept trimming is begun when they are very young. Even then, it usually requires a lot of encouragement, praise and successive approximation: starting with just touching the feet before progressing to clipping one nail, and so on. At this point, I think you have a couple of options if you really, really want to get her claws trimmed regularly: you can take her to a groomer where several people are available to provide restraint during the process or you can enlist the aid of a veterinary behaviorist who would evaluate your dog individually and create a program of behavioral modification designed to alleviate Phoebe’s pedal fears.

My dogs hate the nail trimming as well. I try to give them multiple walks throughout the day to help keep them in control.

My cat, Domino, is another story. I lay him on my lap with his tummy exposed, and file each nail for him. He loves it!
Of course, he also loves to wear hats, and any theme related out fit. We have a Santa suit for Christmas, Halloween costumes, a cool Safari outfit with a great animal print safari hat, etc. He’s a different kinda cat.
