Sawyer Says: Animal Talk - Rynski\’s dog Sawyer brings you animal news, views and furry friends fun (full disclosure: this is really written by Ryn)

Just looking at Oliver makes you want to hug him.

And this dude will hug you right back. Despite his massive bulk and towering appearance, most Newfoundlands are softies, says owner Karen.

Sawyer and Phoebe met Oliver at the Brandi Fenton dog park where the latter was hanging out with his people Karen and Michael and his doggie sibling El Cid.

Neither Sawyer nor Phoebe really wanted anything to do with Oliver, not because he wasn’t attractive and kind, but because he was attractive and kind.

First off, they knew they could not compete. Secondly, they knew he was way too well behaved to join them in rabblerousing.

Oliver is the type who does the right thing. As long as you don’t tick him off by calling him Ollie.

A Tucson newcomer, Oliver came from a Newfoundland Rescue with a good citizen and a therapy dog certificate.

He also replaces the household’s Newfoundland that just passed away. It’s a breed Karen and Michael can’t get enough of.

Karen said Newfoundlands are easygoing and perfect with people, especially kids.

“He’s better trained than I am,” she said.

Love him! He’s beautiful. Newfoundlands are great family members.  I’ve only seen the solid black ones, though.

Newfies are adorable. Big slobberpus love hogs. Looks like Oliver is winkin’ at you Rynski.

Yes, the winky photo is adorable…but me thinks he was winking at his owner who was taking the pic!  Never thought of a Newfoundland for a pet but now I will…

Howdy az! Haven’t had one personally, but have a friend whose newfie is great. Always wants to go for a ride. (scares the heck out of old people and small children) Have you ever had one?

Rynski- A Newfie is a great addition to any household, if you have the room. While lovable, they are very imposing to undesired folks. Seems to me they were actually bred to do search and rescue originally. Warning-they will eat you out of  house and home.  :)

    Hi ya RadMax-
    Having a good day?

I’ve never had one. When I was younger, a friend of my Mom’s had a couple. She traveled quite a bit in the summers, so I became the house/dog sitter. They were sweet as could be, but I felt very safe staying in a strange house and neighborhood with them there.

If you do get a Newfie, be sure to buy the large-sized Pooper-Scooper and a trailer to haul the manure to the dump.

RadMax – good point on the eating out of house and home (even more than my two mongers already do)…which leads to the other good point, as brought up by Leftfield…
Maybe Newfies should come with cranes to haul the waste away.
