All animal fighting, horse tripping outlawed in AZ
Bloody hog-dog fights, the Mexican rodeo event of pulling horses flat on their faces and simply showing up to watch dogs going at each others throats is out, as is other animal fighting of any kind.
Senate Bill 1115, which outlaws animal fighting, horse tripping and dog-fighting-related activities, was signed into by Gov. Jan Brewer, according to a news release from the Animal Defense League of Arizona.

Details on the bill from the release:
For the first time in the Arizona Legislature, a bill addressing one animal issue was successfully expanded to include various other animal protection provisions. SB 1115, animals; fighting (Sen. Paton, Rep. Young Wright) expands to all animals, the offense of dog fighting, presence at a dog fight, and theft of a dog for the purpose of fighting. The measure provides an effective tool to stop hog-dog fights, where a trained dog attacks a wild hog in a pen, causing severe or fatal injuries.
SB 1115 also outlaws the cruel sport of horse tripping which involves lassoing the front legs of a galloping horse, causing the animal to trip and fall, often with fatal results. This Mexican rodeo event is banned in several states including California and New Mexico, and recently was outlawed in the city of Phoenix.
Additionally SB 1115 provides county officials authority to inspect dog kennels if a written complaint is filed alleging animal cruelty or dog fighting. The bill also requires the Arizona Department of Agriculture to establish a registry of equine rescue facilities.
SB 1115 was passed with overwhelming bipartisan support and sponsorship. The bill was supported by a diverse group including law enforcement agencies, animal welfare organizations, Mexican rodeo facility owners, and hunting and ranching interests. ADLA appreciates the efforts of all who made this historic animal protection measure a reality. The new law will provide important tools for addressing animal cruelty issues, which affect not only the victims but entire communities.
My dogs Sawyer and Phoebe as well as my rollicking rats Bobo and Pierre are all pleased, but they do have one question:
Why the heck did two dudes vote “no” on this bill?
The release said Sen. Jack Harper (R-Dist. 4) and Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Dist. 22) didn’t want this bill to go through, both giving “nays” on the matter. Call and ask them why.
Harper: (602) 926-4178; e-mail: jharper@azleg.gov
Biggs: (602) 926-4371; e-mail: abiggs@azleg.gov
If you do call or e-mail, make sure to tell them Sawyer Says.
Have you ever attended, coordinated or bet on animal fighting as a blood sport?
Are you into tripping horses?
Would you admit any of this on an animal-loving blog?

Nothin’ like a good horse tripping…??? Rynski I have seen just about every spectacle from bullfights to cock fighting, don’t care if I never see another. This horse thing is ridiculously cruel. PS-How would somebody vote against this bill?

Luckily I’ve never seen ANY of these things other than in cheesy movies. Yes, the horse thing is awful…so is the fact that two voted NO. Maybe they have secret stashes of horses they trip on the weekends?

These protections should have been in place already, but thank goodness it has happened now. I hope that means stiffer penalties for people who commit these horrible crimes.
I’ve never been to any of these events, but I’ve seen videos of these cruel and violent blood baths.
I’m a very anti-violent type of person. I don’t know that I could kill someone who was trying to kill me. I’m just not made that way. I think if I saw someone engaging in these kinds of animal abuse that I could kill them….or at the very least bet the crap outta them. Maybe pull a Tyson and bite off an ear, or a Hannibal and rip off some face.

Sorry Maxxie…went into an angry zone for a sec. I’m calm again. Wait, where’d I put my rum and coke?
LOL! KIDDING!

hahha! AZMouse – your ear-biting/face-ripping-offing doesn’t sound all that anti-violent to me! haha. I know what you mean, though. Nothing worse than abusing a defenseless animal or my little brother (who is by now bigger than me).

I never get angry, never. My three weaknesses in life are kids, old people and animals. I’d rather someone hurt me than any of them.
Of course, family goes without saying…we’d all do anything for them. Shame your brother is younger. Saw him in one of your pictures and he looked cute. lol

LOL! I’m trying to stick to guys my own age these days anyway. I think everybody’s cute. Radmax wasn’t to shabby in that picture you took of him and his daughter. What’s cuter than a good Dad?
Don’t worry Maxxie, Im not the cyber-stalker type.
I actually enjoy being single. Besides, I wouldn’t have so many great dating nightmares to share.

I probably should’ve waited myself. I had my daughter at 22, son at 24, and (surprise!) another son a month before I turned 30. Phew I’m pooped just thinking about it.
Now my two oldest are almost those ages and they seem like little kids! I can’t imagine them being parents.
Honestly, I loved their teenage years! Don’t understand parents who don’t enjoy teenagers…that’s when they’re the most fun!

Those puppies in the picture are beautiful.

I love the pic of the Pits. I’ve said before I have two. Ophelia is a Hurricane Katrina survivor from N.O. They found her almost dead when the HSPCA when in weeks after humans left. She had had a litter of pups but nothing could be found. With the scars she has it was decided she was probably part of a breeding ring. She is the sweetest dog I have ever owned. And yes, I will probably constantly bring this up. There are no bad dogs just very bad owners.

KD you are right. Dogs aren’t born mean.

I’ve never seen a horse-tripping. In trying to imagine it, I have to wonder why this would be fun to watch? Of course, I’ve been asking myself this about pro wrestling for years.
You are quite the softy, Rynski.
