Slide show: Happy dog wash and the end of claws that will kill you
A good time was NOT had by all at Sunday’s dog wash to benefit Arizona Greyhound Rescue — but that’s only because Phoebe finally got her nails clipped.

Phoebe's historic nail clipping/Ryn Gargulinski
All other pooches were downright bubbly with excitement in the parking lot of Southern Arizona Veterinary and Emergency Specialists’ Fort Lowell location.
As some may recall, my shepherd mix, 7-year-old Phoebe, is famous for her claws that will kill you, a result of her not letting anyone come within 250 yards of her paws.
I’ve repeatedly tried clipping her nails but was only able to get two of them in the nearly two years I’ve had her.
Well, it took four people, a body lock, determination and a very skilled and patient nail clipping woman but the job was done Sunday morning.
Phoebe now jaunts with an added spring in her step and for once didn’t nearly take my eye out when she jumped a “good morning” at my face.
Sawyer took his paw-dicure a bit better, and other pooches on the scene were having a hoot. See the slide show below.
Thanks, Arizona Greyhound Rescue, for the very amusing, helpful – and historic – event.

Cute pics Rynski! Phoebe looks like she could be quite hard to handle when she sets her mind to it.What a ham-hock!
Sawyer and her really are sweethearts from what I’ve seen of them.

thanks, radmax. Yes, phoebe is a definite!! hamhock – and then some! that’s why i was never able to get more than two nails in about two years. they are good dogs – and now they are good dogs with fashionably short nails!

My heart goes out to Phoebe. So glad you took advantage of that service. I bet there are a lot of human candidates in need of a long over-due nail clipping. I had my first professional pedicure last month. I’m proud to say no one had to hold me down, and my toes still look pretty good.
You’re a wonderful pet owner taking your dogs to all of these new experiences. Glad you found some help along the way. Arizona must really be for the dogs – in a positive way. I know I enjoyed my visit a while back.

Thanks, MarcyMom! i know some folks who could use some nail clippings, too (haha!)
i got my first pedicure about two years ago when my friend wendy in NYC made us go when i visited. i was most amazed by that foot shaver thing that whisks off all the dead skin – wow. i later read you’re not supposed to use that as it can make your feet crack, but now that i’ve discovered it…
phoebe has totally recovered from her paw-dicure. she is walking better, even matching sawyer in his saunterous gait. i’ll know now to keep up with it better – and to invite three people over if i plan to do it myself.

There is a better way to do claws now, it’s safer for the dog and doesn’t hurt. The new Pedicure file that sands the claws, rather than hurting the dog by clipping. Takes a bit to learn how to use it, but bet Phoebe will like it better once she gets used to it. And if you do it weekly, the dog will never have uncomfortably long claws again. These new sanders can be bought at drugstores, as well as pet stores.
