Strut your pooch’s stuff at Arizona Greyhounds Rescue’s
Greyhounds & Friends Fall Festival Fundraiser

When: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7
Where: Brandi Fenton Memorial Park, Ramada A
How much: $5 per family, includes raffle ticket

From best dressed to coolest trick with the closet human/dog look-alike in between, a cache of Canines Got Talent contests is on the agenda. Sawyer, Phoebe and I are especially eager to see the entries as I’m one of the judges.

Folks will also get to meet a host of foster dogs, in case they are looking to adopt, and get a $5 nail clipping (Phoebe’s favorite), a chance to win prizes, decorate a pumpkin, enter a dog biscuit bake-off and more.

“We really want to encourage the community to get to know the greyhound breed so our event is for more than just greyhounds,” said dog lover, AGR volunteer and food blogger Karyn Zoldan. “This is the first time AGR has ever done an event outside our breed so we’re really excited.”

Don’t be a jerky dog owner like the folks that own Bimbo and Dumbo by attending
AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day

When: 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8
Where: Reid Park, Ramada No. 7 (enter at first 22nd Street entrance east of Country Club)
How much: Free, raffle tickets $1

Loads of information and activities are on the agenda. Fun stuff includes dog demonstrations and photo booths for you and your dog where you can get your dog’s mug on a coffee mug.

Adoption info from dog rescue groups; info on how you can get any dog, purebred or not, involved with AKC performance events; info on training classes; and $20 microchipping will also be available.

You can also get your dog’s manners tested to see if he passes the Canine Good Citizen exam. Sawyer says he wants nothing to do with that one. Phoebe just barked incessantly when I asked if she were interested.

The German Shepherd Dog Club of Southern Arizona and other Tucson dog lovers joined the American Kennel Club to host the event. You’ll be able to meet some fine German Shepherds and learn more about the breed.

One more animal nugget:

HOPE Animal Shelter’s Craft and Bake sale is coming up Nov. 21 and they are looking for crafters and bakers to donate yummy and interesting creations.

Craft donations can be brought to the shelter the week before the event with baked items brought in the day of. The shelter is located at 2011 E. 12th St. and can be reached at 792-9200. For more info, e-mail Marsha Wronski at mlwronski@yahoo.com

Hahaha cute picture of the person getting eaten by the dog, Ryn!

All this dog talk makes me wish I still had my pooch, Diedra. I adopted her from a humane society around the Phoenix area a little over a year ago. A few months after that, I made some bad decisions with my living situation, and I gave her to someone who was super nice and willing to care for her (because I couldn’t). I really hope she is doing okay…that was one decision that was very hard to make, and I spent many nights crying. I was disappointed with myself…because when I adopted her, I told myself that I would keep her no matter what. Crazy how life turns out sometimes.

Someday after I’m finished with school and have my degree, I’ll adopt another doggie since I’ll have much more free time then. When that time comes, I really plan on keeping the lucky pooch no matter what.

glad you enjoyed the dog eating drawing – i like that one, too – and it WHOLLY reminds me of bimbo and dumbo (haha).
i, too, had to give up a dog when I moved from 2 acres in new mexico to a tiny second floor apt. in calif. apt. said no dogs over 30 pounds and lulu was well on her way to 150 and still a puppy (rott/lab mix).
no, it was not easy but, like you, i knew i left her in good hands and it was just not the right time for me to have a big dog – or any dog. too much confusion going on.
once things stabilized, i got sawyer. and then phoebe when i knew i keep both for the long haul.
when the time is right for you, too, you’ll have the happiest hound this side of speedway (haha).

ps you can still go to the events just to watch all the fun antics in store…

I’m excited to meet Ryn, Phoebe & Sawyer and glad she will be a judge. I’ll be hovering around the raffle table selling tickets so ask someone to point you in my direction.

You don’t need a dog to come to this event. There will be many dogs present as well as other dog rescues; not just glorious greyhounds.

Last year Arizona Greyhound Rescue spent $63,000 on vet bills alone so c’mon down and help support a greyt cause. Admission is $5/per family which gives you a chance to enter your raffle ticket to win a fabulous shopping spree on 4th Avenue. The 4th Avenue merchants were really generous!

    • Rynski

We look forward to meeting you, too, Karyn! we will def. find ya.
That is a LOT of vet bill money – and I’m sure the event will be a success. I’m already gearing up my camera and video cam for the festivities.
It is a “greyt” cause. Greyhounds are so sweet and we look forward to meeting some of them, too (I already told Sawyer not to be jealous and Phoebe not to bark…).

See you there Rynski! May the best pooches win.
BTW, you do keep Sawyer and wreckin’ ball Phoebe on short leashes? :)

  • Rynski

yes – short leashes ONLY – as the long ones get tangled around people’s legs and make them fall over (the people, not the dogs). besides, i get help from my beau who is going to keep an eye on the hounds for me. he may even dress as roadkill for the event!

I hope Bimbo and Dumbo don’t show up.

Anything ever happen with that situation, or did you let sleeping dogs lie, Ryn?

    • Rynski

i hope bimbo and dumbo DO show up and try to enter a contest and they get disqualified for being jerks.
so far i’ve done nothing but mutter under my breath when i see them periodically. i’m trying to just let it go since it’s not worth my headache and, as some had commented, it prob. wouldn’t do a heck of a lot of good to talk to them. i did do the “big thing” the other day and just went the other way when i saw them scrambling to leash their dogs when they saw us.
i have been VERY tempted, however, to put a little sign up where they walk off leash that says:
“Dear idiot dog owners: please leash your hounds. you do not own the path and leashing is the law. please also leave your name, address and phone number on the bottom of this sign so i can properly report you to authorities.”
do you think that will work out well?

      • azmouse

Sorry Ryn, I still detect that little, tiny tinge of pain in your writing over their lack of responsible dog ownership.

I have a really good friend of mine, who just got out of prison and offered his services if I ever need to ’straighten anybody out’.
Let me know. I got your back.

  • Andrew Ulanowski

Ryn – that sign you’re proposing might work. I once worked in an office where we had a single bathroom for all. There was only one other guy and there was frequently urine on the floor (ugh!) and it wasn’t mine. I put up a sign that said, “If you cannot stand closer, please sit down to pee. I am tired of standing in your urine.”
The floor remained dry after that.
