Horses, wildlife blamed for lax border security
Anyone who wonders how so many illegal immigrants sneak across the border every year need not wonder any longer.

Sauve moi!/Ryn Gargulinski
One big reason is because of the horses, according to an e-mail from the office of Congressman Rob Bishop’s office.
You see, some of the land near the border area is protected by environmental laws. This means Border Patrol agents can’t just go blasting through the areas in heavy duty vehicles and machinery.
They have to wait for horses to be delivered to them so they can instead tread naturally on horseback. The wildlife that’s being protected by using the horses is another major cause. Damn animals. They are really wrecking it all down there.
Bishop (R-Utah) recently shared a bunch of documents with The Washington Times which, in turn, wrote about environmental issues hindering border security. Bishop is ranking member of the Resources Subcommittee on Parks, Forests and Public Lands and chairman of the Congressional Western Caucus.
“In a remarkably candid letter to Congressman Rob Bishop, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said her department has had to delay pursuits of illegal immigrants while waiting for horses to be brought in so agents don’t impede upon protected lands, and warns that illegal immigrants will increasingly make use of remote, protected areas to avoid being caught,” according to The Washington Times.
It may seem silly for the agents to be so worried about protecting the land since we highly doubt drug smugglers and their ilk are paying particular attention to it.
But if the agents don’t pay attention, they may be slapped with a hefty fine.

Well preserved environment/Ryn Gargulinski
“The documents (shared by Bishop) also show the Interior Department has charged the Homeland Security Department $10 million over the past two years as a ‘mitigation’ penalty to pay for damage to public lands that agencies say has been caused by Border Patrol agents chasing illegal immigrants,” The Times continues.
None of this is anything new. Anyone who has been to any type of meeting on the virtual fence or other border security issues knows the environmental groups show up en masse.
Border lights may be too bright. Towers may be too tall. Other security measures may be too intrusive.
On the other side of the fence, so to speak, we get those who don’t give a hoot about any type of wildlife if it interferes with our human pursuits. Never mind if the animals were here first or that we are successfully adding many to the ever-growing endangered list.
So should we just rape the land in the name of border security? Or should we hold back and save the wildlife while society may suffer?
It’s just too bad the wildlife don’t get it, and perhaps pick one side of the border or the other to make their home rather than screwing it all up by trying to live free in the middle.
What do you think?
Is protecting our nation’s security more important than protecting wildlife?
Should we stop building anything that may impede with wildlife?
Is there a happy medium?

Hmmm, bit of a sticky wicket, eh Rynski? I don’t think we should run willy-nilly over the flora and fauna, but border security is important!
Horses can cause their own brand of destruction, but are not nearly as intrusive as motorized vehicles.
I like the horseback option. Quiet and they can go just about anywhere. It does create a whole different set of logistics problems though. For instance, do the bring extra mounts for those they apprehend?
November 18th, 2009 on 9:53 am
yeah, this one is WAY tough!! i, too, am stuck in the middle.
the horses option is being used, but that’s what one of the complaints was. BP had to stop all action until the horses could be brought to them.
as far as capturing folks while on horses, maybe they can hook up a little wagon with those stockade things to pull behind them…hahahaha
sticky wicket is a wonderful term.

And helicopters? Are those also banned? The security of our nation is more important than the perceived damage the BP and ICE may cause along the border. I don’t think it is unreasonable to exempt a five(5) mile strip of land from environmental law the entire length of the border with Mexico.

Why not just build a secure fence and energize it with 100,000 or more volts? Oh that’s right, the bleeding hearts wouldn’t want to be responsible for anyone ignorant enough to get fried making an * illegal * entry. But wait, isn’t the bleeding heart mentality what is responsible for the invasion in the first place? Aren’t they the reason why we have all these gangbangers killing people in South Tucson with all that imported Mexican “culture” from south of the border?

I guess you’re onto us, Ado. Yes, only the really insightful (and fans of right-wing radio) know that lib’rals and illegals are the source of all our problems. If it weren’t for the likes of them, the trains would run on time, the budget would be balanced and white women would live without fear.

What a no-brainer! We’ve been invaded and occupied by a minimum of 12 million lawbreaking illegal aliens. They tear up the landscape sneaking over and leave millions of tons of trash. Build the fence, build the roads, build the towers and stop the invasion!

hi estoban,
does this mean you voted for the first option on the survey? haha.
thanks for input. i can’t see it that cut and dry, but glad you have a stance and are stickin’ to it.
November 18th, 2009 on 10:50 am
The govt. needs to get their act together on this.
November 18th, 2009 on 10:57 am
agree. someone needs to take some kind of stand that stops all the wishy-washyness.

This is an issue where, I believe, public safety and security trumps environmental issues. Southern AZ is one of the main arteries for human and narcotics smuggling into the U.S. and more needs to be done to stop it. The U.S. needs to stop being intimidated into inaction by environmental and open borders groups. The country needs and has a right to enforce our borders. I don’t understand why politicians are afraid to act on this. Whose votes are they trying to gain by doing nothing?
November 18th, 2009 on 6:19 pm
good question, chris. i do wonder why authorities are so wary of taking a strong stance on this issue.
November 18th, 2009 on 2:47 pm
and yet the federal park rangers are trying to STOP horse back riding in the parks, because they “irreparably impact the environment” sort of a bit of double speak by the feds……no big surprise. Sure seems to me that we are fighting this immigration issue with one hand tied behind our backs. Too bad the other side isn’t.

Open the border to anyone who wants to walk, drive or ride back and forth except Capital. Capital should be forced to apply for permission and be put on an interminable waiting list before being considered. Then, before being granted a red card, Capital has to take a test about the relevant human rights issues and labor laws in the country they wish to enter. Finally, if capital passes all the tests and fulfills all the requirements, they can beg for labor. Instead of getting cheap labor, they will have to pay whatever it would cost them to hire the same worker in the US, plus an added surcharge if the products are imported back over the border to be sold in the US.
This way, people are free to cross the border while keeping the “undesirables” from crossing willy-nilly. Of course, I would expect capital to try and skirt the law and sneak over the border. If so, we’ll have to put up a big wall and have some armed guards.

Appears Capital is very happy staying right here Lefty. He evidently is very popular with our Latin neighbors, as so many come here seeking him…
November 18th, 2009 on 9:21 pm
I think capital decided the labor was less “uppity” and demanding in Asia, so he left us and Latin America. If you don’t believe me, call your bank’s 800 number and see who answers the phone.

You mean Rajib is not American?
Vantage West. Always Americans.
Capital is alive and well, I’m happy to report. Somewhat weathered by those who would seek to usurp his noble origins…a dollar’s labor for a dollar’s pay, but I think he’ll be alright. Seems the countries doing the best financially are turning to his wisdom more and more. He is quite disturbed about those who’s greed outweighs any sense of integrity.
Humans, go figure.

i am with lefty …….. open the borders fully and completely. shutdown ALL check points. no green cards, no visas, no checking.
fire all border patrol and ICE agents ……… close them all down.
next federally mandate that NO leo anywhere can ask any status.
next open all government jobs to anyone … no backgrounds, anyone can apply and no one can discriminate.
come 2010, anyone that shows up at the polls can vote. citizenship is not required. after all, aren’t we all citizens of the world?
no limits, no boundaries ……. since we will no longer have any borders, let’s eliminate the nation and we and kanada can just call ourselves north america.
how about it lefty?

Either I had some bad tofu for dinner, or you’re beginning to make some sense. You left out the most important prerequisite for your rather ambitious plans though – a worldwide socialist revolution. In the meantime though, capital will still have to bid against capital for the services of labor, citizen or no; with labor migrating freely to the highest bidder.
November 18th, 2009 on 10:22 pm
no bad tofu lefty ……………….
just a plan to accelerate the back flow. a catalyst to the inevidable.
i am for health care reform, legalization of the illegal masses, opening the borders, socialism movement ……… all just gasoline.

you crack me up lefty.
don’t you want to see all this happen and then watch the response? i do.

What is the arguement here? every single alien “BROKE THE LAW!” Our Government, past & present, Republican & Democrat, have allowed the invasion of 20 to 30 million criminals and uneducated peons which is the largest invasion of any Nation, at any time, by any means & in direct violation of Article IV, Section IV of our Constitution.
This refusal to abide by our Constitution or enforce our Immigration Laws should be classified as Treason of the most foul kind, & as grounds for impeachment & trials for Treason!
Not only have they allowed the invasion, they force American tax payers to pay Billions on Billions of dollars to provide Welfare, Prison cells, Educate the invaders numerous children, and free medical care, at the same time the invading horde break numerous laws and massive document fraud, & are destroying our schools, hospitals, communities, culture and standard of living while Robbing, Raping, Killing & Assaulting American Citizens WAKE UP PEOPLE!

“indigenous”-and these were the asiatic peoples who emigrated across the Bering land mass some 11,000-50,000 years ago? They probably found a culture already here; Luzia Woman. They only preceded us by a few millennia. Appears humans are always on the move, and trespassing while they are at it.

I am looking for a country that will take me in as an unwelcome guest/illegal alien/political refugee and lavish me with the fiscal benefits that the US does – allow me to make the same wages their citizens do, and yet still qualify for financial boons. I regret that I cannot squeeze out a dozen children to aid me in collecting a bigger portion of this largesse, too. Citizenship needs to be based on the mother’s legal status in the US, not just hopping the fence and squatting in the dirt. I love how Mexican President Fox made available care packages for those planning on illegal border crossings, in a humane effort to save these people during their flight, rather than focusing his government on improving his country and thus retaining his citizens. How much of that care package debris is littering our protected lands – let us send a bill to the Mexican government to clean up and restore those areas. I am not racist, I am just very supportive of laws being meant to govern everyone, not just those that choose to obey them.
