Sawyer Says: Animal Talk - Rynski\’s dog Sawyer brings you animal news, views and furry friends fun (full disclosure: this is really written by Ryn)

Local canine celebrity Scout ran away with part of the show, but every dog had his or her day at Saturday’s Arizona Greyhound Rescue’s Greyhounds & Friends Fall Festival Fundraiser.

Deb Ross’s dog Scout sauntered away with top honors in the best trick and human/pet lookalike contests, but others were not far behind with their howling good looks and feisty antics.

Alexis Pate, 6, also proved herself quite the dog biscuit baker with her prize-winning doggie quiche.

Folks had a chance to schmooze with the gentle greyhounds, many of which were up for adoption. Contact AGR if you can give one these fabulous pooches an equally fabulous home.

Also enjoy the slide show below and the video of Scout’s winning trick, where he dies after being shot, but gets CPR from Ross in the hopes to revive him.

A big thank you to everyone who dedicated time, effort and resources to make this event possible. And thanks again for asking me to be a judge. Now I’ve got one more honor on my resume.

Greyhounds & Friends Fall Festival Fundraiser

When: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7
Where: Brandi Fenton Memorial Park, Ramada A
How much: $5 per family, includes raffle ticket

From best dressed to coolest trick with the closet human/dog look-alike in between, a cache of Canines Got Talent contests is on the agenda. Sawyer, Phoebe and I are especially eager to see the entries as I’m one of the judges.

Folks will also get to meet a host of foster dogs, in case they are looking to adopt, and get a $5 nail clipping (Phoebe’s favorite), a chance to win prizes, decorate a pumpkin, enter a dog biscuit bake-off and more.

“We really want to encourage the community to get to know the greyhound breed so our event is for more than just greyhounds,” said dog lover, AGR volunteer and food blogger Karyn Zoldan. “This is the first time AGR has ever done an event outside our breed so we’re really excited.”

Adoption info from dog rescue groups; info on how you can get any dog, purebred or not, involved with AKC performance events; info on training classes; and $20 microchipping will also be available.

You can also get your dog’s manners tested to see if he passes the Canine Good Citizen exam. Sawyer says he wants nothing to do with that one. Phoebe just barked incessantly when I asked if she were interested.

The German Shepherd Dog Club of Southern Arizona and other Tucson dog lovers joined the American Kennel Club to host the event. You’ll be able to meet some fine German Shepherds and learn more about the breed.

One more animal nugget:

HOPE Animal Shelter’s Craft and Bake sale is coming up Nov. 21 and they are looking for crafters and bakers to donate yummy and interesting creations.

Craft donations can be brought to the shelter the week before the event with baked items brought in the day of. The shelter is located at 2011 E. 12th St. and can be reached at 792-9200. For more info, e-mail Marsha Wronski at mlwronski@yahoo.com

We love helping out our local animal shelters and organizations, but we don’t always have millions of dollars, or even an extra $20, to do so.

Not to fret. Two upcoming events need help and assisting with either will not cost you a penny.

Volunteer for really cool dog fest

Arizona Greyhound Rescue needs lots of volunteers for its upcoming Greyhounds & Friends Fall Festival Fundraiser. Sawyer was thrilled when I was asked to be a judge, so I’m definitely in. (No, he won’t be entering any contests with me judging.)

The gala affair will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Brandi Fenton Memorial Park, Ramada A.

Activities will include a host of Canines Got Talent contests, featuring best trick, best dressed, closest human/dog look-alike, best-behaved foster dog and a dog biscuit bake-off.

You’ll also get to meet foster dogs from Cold Wet Noses, Santa Cruz Humane Society, Greyhounds2Go, Greyhound Adoption League, and get to know Equine Voices Rescue & Sanctuary.

The $5 admission covers the entire family and includes a raffle ticket for a chance to win a shopping spree on Fourth Avenue. Other raffles, auction items and cool stuff will be for sale. Will blog a reminder with more details closer to the event date.

If you’re going to attend anyway, you may as well make it even more fun by volunteering to help. Volunteers can e-mail vOlunteer96@azgreyhoundrescue.org. (The second character in the e-mail is the numeral 0, or zero, and nobody knows why.)

Donate your old junk to ACT

The Animal Cruelty Taskforce doesn’t really want junk per se. But it does want your unwanted electronics, jewelry, fine art, collectibles or clothing for its upcoming e-mail auction fundraiser. Check your garage or behind couches for unused, but still functional, TVs, DVD players, video game systems, computers, cell phones or computer accessories.

They will do the animals more good than just sitting gathering dust.

Drop off items from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. now through Friday, Oct. 30, at the Humane Society of Southern Arizona Companions for Life Center, 3465 E. Kleindale Rd.

The auction will be held Nov. 3 and 4 and benefit Action for Animals, the joint cruelty prevention programs of the HSSAZ and ACT. Will post more details on the auction as they become available.

Please note: No proceeds from either event will go to Dumbo and Bimbo.

A good time was NOT had by all at Sunday’s dog wash to benefit Arizona Greyhound Rescue — but that’s only because Phoebe finally got her nails clipped.

Phoebe's historic nail clipping/Ryn Gargulinski

Phoebe's historic nail clipping/Ryn Gargulinski

All other pooches were downright bubbly with excitement in the parking lot of Southern Arizona Veterinary and Emergency Specialists’ Fort Lowell location.

As some may recall, my shepherd mix, 7-year-old Phoebe, is famous for her claws that will kill you, a result of her not letting anyone come within 250 yards of her paws.

I’ve repeatedly tried clipping her nails but was only able to get two of them in the nearly two years I’ve had her.

Well, it took four people, a body lock, determination and a very skilled and patient nail clipping woman but the job was done Sunday morning.

Phoebe now jaunts with an added spring in her step and for once didn’t nearly take my eye out when she jumped a “good morning” at my face.

Sawyer took his paw-dicure a bit better, and other pooches on the scene were having a hoot. See the slide show below.

The all-breed wash, the second and final one for summer, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of Southern Arizona Veterinary and Emergency Specialists, 141 E. Fort Lowell Road.

Phoebe’s already hiding since she heard the event also offers nail clipping. She takes pride in her razor-sharp talons, also known as the claws that can kill you.

Dog washing is $10; nail clipping is $10; or you can go for both for $15. No appointment necessary.

Thanks to TC.com blogger Karyn Zoldan for this squeaky clean news tip.

Tucson is hot to trot with animal fundraisers during the next week or so. Your options include drinking wine for greyhounds or felines, eating hotdogs for dog park grass seed or dining at some Tucson locales to raise funds for more dogs and kitties.

Since I’m one of those always-broke people, I can’t give big chunks of money to organizations, but I try to support them by donating artwork or showing up to one of the less costly functions.

In fact, Sawyer and Phoebe will be making a cameo Saturday at the North Sixth Avenue Dog Park fundraiser. It’s Sawyer’s first dog park from whence he harbors fond memories of tussling with Shree. We’ll be scouting for upcoming Tucson Pets.

Here are your delicious fundraising choices:

Friday, July 24
Wine for felines
Pastiche Modern Eatery Wine Shop, 3025 N. Campbell Ave.

$25 gets you wine tasting and a hearty donation towards the Hermitage Cat Shelter, Tucson’s no-kill cat sanctuary, and kicks off the pet food drive, which starts Monday.

Saturday and Sunday, July 25 and 26, 5 to 7 p.m.
Frolic for the dog park
Mansfield Park, Ramada #3, across from dog park at 2075 N. Sixth Ave.

Cover the cost of grass seed for the North Sixth Avenue Dog Park by simply showing up to eat a hotdog and its accoutrements. Event put on by North Sixth Avenue Dog Park Volunteer Committee and Tucson Parks and Recreation Dept.

$5 gets you a hotdog, chips, beverage and a frozen treat. Also get a chance to meet other pooches and their owners who are sure to attend the event. Don’t forget badboy Sawyer will be at Mansfield briefly and then frolicking at the Sixth Ave. dog park Saturday.

Sunday, July 26, 4 to 6 p.m.
Cheers to greyhounds
CataVinos Wine Shoppe, 3063 N. Alvernon Way, 323-3063

Sip some sumptuous wine at a wine tasting to support the Arizona Greyhound Rescue.

$20 gets you six tastes, nibbles and tasting notes. Half the cost is tax-deductible. Also meet greyhound rescuers who will tell you anything you need to know about the breed or how to adopt one of the gentle pooches.

Monday, July 27, through Saturday, Aug. 22
Pet food drive
Hermitage Cat Shelter
and select locations

Donate any type of pet food for the Hermitage’s “Food for People’s Pets” program, for which the cupboard is running bare.

Bring by canned or dry dog or cat food to the shelter, 5278 E. 21st St., from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or another participating location: Five Star Termite and Pest Control; Shall We Dance – Dance Studios; Safeway grocery stores; Holistic Animal Shoppes; Precision Tool; Sabino Canyon Pet Resort.

Tuesday, July 28, 5 to 8 p.m.
Get sweet HOPE at Sweet Tomatoes – must bring flier (see bottom of post).
Sweet Tomatoes, 6202 E. Broadway or 4420 N. Stone Ave.

Dine at either Sweet Tomatoes location to raise money for HOPE Animal Shelter, Tucson’s only no-kill dogs and cat shelter.

Any price is fine. The more you eat, the more you donate. Just make sure to buy a drink with the buffet and hand the flier to the cashier or no money will go to HOPE.

Friday, July 31, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Pandas for anti-cruelty
Panda Express locations throughout Tucson

Chow down at any Panda Express in Tucson and 20 percent of your bill’s cost will be donated to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona’s anti-cruelty program.

Price depends on how hungry you are. Goal is to match $50,000. That’s a lot of orange chicken. Check exact locations by clicking here. Some include Park Place and Tucson malls; the corner of Swan and Grant roads; corner of Golf Links and Wilmot roads; La Cholla; River Road; 22nd Street, Cortaro Road and Irvington Road.

Of course, you can always help local animal shelters and organizations even when there are no events scheduled by sending a donation or putting them in you will. Wouldn’t you love to see your greedy relative’s face when he sees you left all your assets to FAIR?

Some shelters and organizations, too, will welcome donations of time, blankets, food, cleaning supplies or other pet-related stuff. Contact your favorite to find out what they need.

wb-logolil15Do you donate to animal causes? Why or why not?

Have you ever volunteered for a local shelter?

Was it fun? Did you end up adopting 602 cats?

I remember someone at the Pima Animal Care Center once telling me the average employee there ended up with at least four pets.

Here’s the flier needed for HOPE’s donations - yes, we know, it’s a crummy copy but the best we could do:
