Great article. Typo on " . . .in the East, were American citizens were no longer threatened by Indians. . " - (Where) - Also . . why is the overall page design of the Citizen so archaic and clumsy looking? There is nothing about the Citizen's design that even remotely suggests that it is almost 2013. imho

Typo on Pinal Apaches. You had "Penal". Good article. How about citing some sources so that the readers could do some further reading. There has been some good books out in the last few years.
The commanding officer of the troops in Tucson at Camp Lowell send two soldiers on mules. (They were Infantry, no Cavalry present). With a message to Whitman warning him of the raiding party. the raiding party knew the Army would do that and left a guard at Canon Del Oro and stopped the soldiers at gunpoint and had them wait there until it was too late to do anything. If they had not done that the Army would have had troops sent to the Apache camp a few miles from Camp Grant at the confluence of the San Pedro and Arivapai and they would have fired on the Americans, Papagos and Mexicans.( A truely multi-cultural affair!)
There was a trial held for what they did and the jury was out only a few minutes and everybody was found innocent.
Sam Hughes supplied the weapons as his position as Territorial guard. They used surplus carbines. He never went on the raid.
