Greg Biffle wins in Michigan, makes history for Ford

BROOKLYN, Mich. – Greg Biffle cemented Ford’s turnaround Sunday at Michigan International Speedway, scoring the 1,000th victory for the manufacturer across NASCAR’s three national series.
It was the second straight victory at the 2-mile oval for Biffle, whose most recent Sprint Cup Series win was last August at Michigan.

ARDMORE, Pa. — Phil Mickelson is in a familiar position once again at the U.S. Open – to either finally close out a win in a tournament he truly cherishes or to suffer yet another maddening close call.
Mickelson, a four-time major champion but the only player to finish runner-up five times in the U.S. Open, shot even-par 70 Saturday in the third round of the U.S. Open at unyielding Merion Golf Club and has a one-shot lead heading into Sunday’s final round.

Charges dropped against UA football’s Ka’Deem Carey

TUCSON — All charges have been dropped against Ka’Deem Carey in a domestic violence case, the city announced today.
The Arizona Wildcats running back was facing misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct charges stemming from an alleged domestic violence incident in December involving his ex-girlfriend, who was pregnant at the time.

Gary Bettman says NHL still hoping Phoenix Coyotes stay in Glendale

CHICAGO — With a decision on the Phoenix Coyotes possible in the next two weeks, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says the league remains focused on keeping the team in Arizona.
The NHL has chosen a new ownership group for the team, Renaissance Sports & Entertainment. But the group’s deal is contingent on a new lease agreement for Jobing.com Arena, and negotiations with the Glendale City Council are still ongoing.

Arizona Diamondbacks recall Joe Paterson, Charles Brewer

The Diamondbacks have recalled pitchers Joe Paterson and Charles Brewer from Triple-A Reno, optioned Tyler Skaggs to Triple-A Reno and placed Matt Reynolds on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left elbow.
Paterson was 2-1 with a 2.36 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 24 relief appearances with Reno.

ASU’s Jordan Clarke finishes runner-up in shot put at NCAA Championships

Jordan Clarke wrapped up his ASU career with a runner-up finish in the men’s shot put with a best throw of 66-6 1/2 and was just 1 1/4 inches out of a fifth NCAA title. Texas’ Ryan Couser won with a 66-7 3/4 throw.

ASU’s Chelsea Cassulo wins hammer throw title at NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Arizona State senior Chelsea Cassulo won the national title in the hammer throw at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday in Eugene, Ore.
Cassulo trailed for the majority of the final round of throws as her day’s best of 67.35 meters in the opening round was good enough for only third when she came up her sixth and final throw. There she launched the hammer 69.12 meters (226 feet, 9 inches) to jump from third to first and win her first NCAA title in the process.

Los Angeles Kings beat Chicago Blackhawks to get back in series

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings, back in a familiar setting, clawed their way back into contention in their Western Conference finals showdown with the Chicago Blackhawks in a familiar manner – another hard-hitting, low-scoring victory and another strong performance by goaltender Jonathan Quick.
In danger of falling behind in the series 3-0 and seeing their attempted Stanley Cup title repeat slip away, the Kings won 3-1 in Game 3 Tuesday and can tie the series 2-2 with another home victory Thursday.

Charley Hoffman looks for redemption at US Open following weak showing at the Memorial

Charley Hoffman played so badly on the last day at the Memorial that he thought about skipping the U.S. Open qualifier. He changed his mind and now is headed to Merion.
Hoffman, whose 81 was the worst score in the final round at the Memorial, opened with a 7-under 65 at The Lakes and followed with a 68 at Brookside to lead a group of 15 players who qualified for the U.S. Open. The qualifier near Columbus, Ohio, was filled with several PGA Tour players who had been at Muirfield Village.

Arizona Wildcats football to play home-and-home series with Houston Cougars

The University of Arizona football team will play a home-and-home series with Houston during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, the schools announced Tuesday.
The Wildcats and Cougars will meet the second week of each season — in Tucson in 2017 and in Houston in 2018. The 2017 campaign will mark the first meeting between the teams since 1986.

Karrie Webb rallies to win ShopRite LPGA Classic

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Karrie Webb won her first LPGA Tour title in two years, rallying from five shots down for a two-stroke victory over Shanshan Feng on Sunday in the wind-whipped ShopRite LPGA Classic.
The 38-year-old Hall of Famer shot a magnificent 3-under 68 in blustery conditions to win for the 39th time on tour, the most among active players. The Australian had a 4-under 209 total on The Bay Course at the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club, tying the highest winning score at the course.

Tony Stewart wins at Dover for first victory of season

Stewart, who hadn’t won since Daytona last July, benefited from a NASCAR ruling on the final restart.

ASU’s Jon Rahm keeps lead in NCAA golf championships

Arizona State’s Jon Rahm remained in first place after the second round of the NCAA Division I golf championships Wednesday in Atlanta.
Rahm shot a 2-over 72 on Wednesday but held a 1-shot lead over two players. He shot a 9-under 61 in Tuesday’s opening round.

ASU lands 3 on All-Pac-12 baseball team

Arizona State’s Michael Benjamin, Kasey Coffman and Ryan Kellogg were named to the All-Pac-12 baseball team Wednesday, all for the first time.
Kellogg, a freshman left-hander, is 11-0 and eighth nationally in victories. Juniors Benjamin and Coffman are ASU’s top two hitters with .349 and .335 averages, respectively.
