Simple question: would you draft Nic Wise?

by on Apr. 15, 2010, under Sports

So, Nic Wise had a so-so outing in Portsmouth last week, averaging 6 points a game. He didn’t score in one game, going 0 for 4 from the floor.

To be honest, he’s one of the most loyal Wildcat players to play here – having endured four different coaches in his time. He deserved better but now comes the question: if you were a general manager of an NBA team would you draft him? And what would be his chances of making the roster?

Let’s remind ourselves that Jason Gardner, a pretty good, tough guard, didn’t get a chance in the NBA in part because he just wasn’t good enough.

What are your thoughts?

Yep. If I owned an Italian pro team.

But if I owned an NBA team, then no.

Only if Wise Sr. and Nic Jr. came together as a package deal.  What NBA team doesn’t want defensive intesity, scoring in bunches and it’s players playing last-man-standing-stomps-the-other-man-to-the-ground-and-beyond b-ball?  We would need a sports psychologist, though, to explain the drop-off from Nic’s days in high school playing for Pops to the days of The Dance That Went Bye-Bye.

Interesting that Lavin would comment that for all the coaching Wise received, he should be a pretty darn smart baller, one perhaps destined to coach.  Well, coach Steve, here’s your chance to see to it that No. 13 fulfills your prophecy.   Hire him.  Otherwise, I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that Kenny Lofton stood a better chance of getting drafted than NW does.  The question is, will Nic be a better coach than Kenny was a baseball player?

A couple of one-on-one games I’d pay good money to charity to see:

    Wise vs. Gardner
    Shakur vs. Wise

Honestly, I think Nic’s game would thrive most in the open court style of NBA play.  If I was an NBA team I would hire Nic Wise as a free agent.  I believe he can do well being a reserve.  So yes I would draft Nic.

All depends on what you need for your team. If you need a starter that will score in bunches, shut down the other teams PG, and produces a bunch of Sports Center highlights, Nic is unfortunately not your man. If you need a reliable backup PG that provide some scoring and understands how to play as part of a team (i.e. refer/pass to the superstars) then you should give Nic a chance. Look at Aaron Brooks, he is doing pretty well on the Rockets. Can’t say he had a better college career than Nic.
Gardner should have been drafted. Think what you want about Bill Simmons, he is right that most NBA GM’s are doing a terrible job. Gardner was no standout, but he sure could have run a team better than some of the other PGs in the league. Gotta say that there is a bunch of players in the NBA that could be easily be replaced with others.
Also, Gardner shot terribly from 3pt range his senior year. Nic looks to be a better shooter.
