Stories in six words
Friday, October 7th, 2011What can you do with only six words? A lot.
SMITH magazine is the home of Six-Word Memoirs© where you can find amazing life stories boiled down and concentrated to the prerequisite six words. With precision and wit, these mini stories take on large life themes such as life, love, happiness, work, questions, and resolutions. Here are a few examples of how evocative they can be:
More slow boil than hot flash.
Divorced. Still sleep on one side.
Step away from my Nutella…Now!
My phone died but I didn’t.
I kvetch. And therefore, I am.
I’m more fun when I’m alone.
Better parent before I had kids.
Obituary still sitting on kitchen counter.
Dad was my first Avon client.
Contemplating suicide can’t commit, double coward.
I love the punctuation. Modern day haiku?
If you’d like to try it, it’s easy to share your own six word masterpiece on their website or to comment on someone else’s. If you scroll down the page you will find a cloud inviting you to explore memoirs about a variety of subjects. A cloud enlarges the words that are used more frequently and the most startling thing is that the biggest words are breakup, death, divorce, suicide, love and never. Hmmmm.
SMITH magazine’s mission is “to be a place for storytelling, with a focus on personal narrative.” They features Story Projects, Comics and Books and they have a “younger cousin”, SMITH teens.
