Phoenix Suns draft Maryland center Alex Len: Rapid Reactionby Fabian Ardaya on Jun. 27, 2013, under Phoenix Suns
All I can say is I’m shocked.
With Kentucky center Nerlens Noel and Kansas guard Ben McLemore on the board, the Phoenix Suns selected Alex Len, who was projected to go around 10th but on draft day was rumored to go first to Cleveland.
I like Len. I really do. He’s a skilled big man with a strong post game and the ability to protect the rim. He can also knock down a face up jumper every once in a while. Plus he has a high cieling.
But he still has a lot to learn. He started playing basketball when he was 13. He’s 20 now. He will have to learn basketball on the fly for an already young team. He only averaged 12 points per game as the only option for Maryland. How’s he supposed to become a scorer for this team?
Plus, the guy who was projected to go number one (Noel) with a higher cieling was still on the board. So was the guy that the Suns organization needed and coveted (McLemore). The Suns, who needed a wing scorer and offensive weapon, took a rim protecting big man. At least it gives them more motivation to deal Gortat.
On Friday June 14, AZ Sports & Lifestyle Magazine writer Tony Capobianco saw Len in US Airways arena during his coverage of the Phoenix Mercury and said that his addition to the Suns roster gives them a nice young core.
“The Suns have a nice young core with Alex Len and the Morris brothers,” Capobianco said. “However, they’re going to need to sign some free agent scorers in order to compete in both the short and long term.”
I guess we’ll have to see from here. I just don’t really understand at this point, but this could make McDonough & co. look like geniuses in a couple years.
