Happy Fourth of July! Four potential deadline deals for the Diamondbacksby Fabian Ardaya on Jul. 04, 2013, under Arizona Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks have had a successful season thus far, emerging as contenders
who could turn heads come playoff time for a crowded National League. Here are
some interesting trade options for the D-Backs as the deadline nears:
TRADE #1: Diamondbacks send OF Cody Ross, 3B Matt Davidson, and prospects for
Phillies SP Cliff Lee
The Diamondbacks have a clear need for starting pitching, and adding Lee to the
roster gives the rotation a certified ace and workhorse, which could be key in
the playoffs. The Diamondbacks have seen inconsistency with Trevor Cahill, Ian
Kennedy, and Wade Miley, so Lee would be a welcome sight and addition. The
Phillies could get younger with prospects such as Davidson, and Ross can be
serviceable and a potential trade piece for next season.
TRADE #2: LHP Joe Paterson, SS Chris Owings, and prospects for Braves SP Mike Minor
Once again the Diamondbacks are looking to acquire starting pitching, and Mike Minor could be a solid pitcher for the future as well as the present. The Braves have a desperate need for left handed relief help after Eric O’Flaherty went down with injury, and Paterson can easily fill that void. Owings would just be icing on the cake. His bat and versatility could help plug the void of the Martín Prado trade.
TRADE #3: OF Jason Kubel and prospects for Cubs for RHP Jeff Samardzija
Samardzija is a guy who, while embraced by the Cubs’ fanbase, is in need of a change of scenery. Arizona would be a perfect place for him as a rotation spot for a contender. Kubel would give Chicago a bat and another trade chip to pair with Alfonso Soriano.
TRADE #4: 3B Matt Davidson, SS Chris Owings, and prospects for Brewers RHP Yovani Gallardo
Yovani doesn’t have the best history with Arizona but has been strong this season for
Milwaukee. Pitching for a contending Diamondbacks team could change things, and give the Brewers options for the future.
Any of these deals would definitely help the D-Backs in the short term without compromising the long term, which still looks very bright.
