Talking about change with Chans Coxby Tony Capobianco on Aug. 13, 2013, under TC Q&A
Arizona State media day was like a social meet and greet between the players and media. One of the newcomers that I got to meet was freshman linebacker Chans Cox. He graduated early from Blue Ridge High School to enroll at ASU for the spring semester. Rivals.com rated him as the nation’s 150 overall prospect, the No. 13 outside linebacker recruit and the No. 3 overall prospect in the state of Arizona. So he’s a huge pick up by head coach Todd Graham and baring health, he should be seeing some playing time in his freshman year.
TC: What is your initial impression of Arizona State?
CC: It’s been great. I picked Arizona State because coach [Todd] Graham had everything that I was looking for in a coach. He talked about character, discipline, and the relationship with him and the players and the coaches mean a whole to me.
TC: What kind of degree do you wish to earn here in Arizona State?
CC: I’ve been looking into exercise science to be a physical therapist. I’ve been surround in sports my whole life and I love to just stay in that and keep doing that.
TC: Well great choice buddy, you picked the one university in Arizona without a medical school! As a freshman in stature but still high school in terms of your body, what has been the most overwhelming to you so far?
CC: I graduated early, so I’ve been able to be around the guys for a while. When it comes with the football aspect, the speed of the game compared to high school is something that I’ve been just blown away with and something that I really had to adjust to. So that’s really the biggest eye opener to me, cause ASU has a good weight program. Since being here over the winter, I’ve really put on some good weight with that and I feel just as big and can fit in with the other guys.
TC: We’re both two guys with common interests when it comes to sports and physiology, and it’s almost the most fascinating thing about football when people like me see kids like you starting in their late teens get so big yet move so fast.
CC: It’s crazy to see the talent. I don’t go a day without going, “Wow! Look at him move!”
TC: Physically, have you seen any difference between you in high school a few a months ago and you now?
CC: I’ve been here a full semester. I came in at 6-2 215, and now I’m 6-3 240. I’m weighing as much as Carl Bradford right now, so I got to keep watching what I eat. My main focus is to stay fast.
