To the reporter Johanna: Good luck on your writing career. It's great to be able to get experience in this way! As you have seen this is a very "interesting" topic for Tucsonans. We have the experience of a misspent $230,000,000 that we can look to as an example. Nothing to show for it. (Except the Presidio and the Fox Theater and we still owe on the Fox) In Tucson fashion we will screw up the trolley project.
So why is the trolley going west of the Santa Cruz again?? What's over there. No museums as yet?

A streetcar system on rails is both very expensive and inflexible. A dedicated rubber-tired fleet of dedicated buses could provide the alleged transportation benefits without the high cost and disruption. See my post: http://tucsoncitizen.com/wryheat/2012/02/20/will-tucsons-streetcar-infatuation-become-a-money-pit/
One comment to that post notes "Pensacola, Florida has a very successful "trolley" system – the trolleys look just like a 1920s streetcar, but they’re rubber tired and diesel powered (though quite quiet). Being on rubber tires, they have flexibility to go anywhere there’s a paved road, PLUS they’re available for rental by civic groups and even private parties (weddings – it’s totally cool to trolley your wedding party to the beach for the wedding, then back to the hotel for the reception)."

Anyone who thinks this is a great project is mentally deranged. I spent
45 years working on the railroad and you people have NO idea about what you are getting into. The costs are so enormous that the debt of operation in the future will haunt the city forever. Just the cost per mile for construction should give you some idea of whats ahead. All of you are making a very stupid mistake. I'll be laughing and watching the show.

What scares me is an "educator" who thinks that an AK-47 (or, if you prefer, Sweet Lou, a machine gun) makes an appropriate symbol for a children's educational program. The only thing that scares me more than that is the thought of you with a gun: now that scares the beejesus out of me.

I'm sorry, but I don't think that Gabrielle Giffords deserves to be honored! In fact, I believe that she has shown poor leadership and judgement that contributed to the killing of all those good people in attendance at the pep rally. A good leader would always know that there is a potential for danger at these type events and that turning down police protection for that event invites loons to do what they do best create mayhem. Therefore, one may say that she should be sued by each and every family that lost a member for "Contributory Negligence". Therefore, she doesn't deserved to be honored for her bad judgement and bad leadership!

"Cuba post-revolution has been as free of racism as any decent society might aspire to be "

Numerous Afro-Cuban activists beg to differ with you. But don't worry, once you and your friends get enough power you can have them taken out of the picture and get back to creating famines and digging mass graves for intellectuals. Viva la revolucion!

"I’m presuming you’re banking on defeating him when he runs for reelection? You’d better hope that you do."

I'm not really banking my hopes for the future on the wisdom of the voters of Arizona. While they "may not be making old white people like they used to", there is no shortage of them in the immediate vicinity of Arizona.
