Hummingbirds of the Patagonia Mountains in Arizona (Slideshow)

by on Sep. 04, 2010, under Off Topic

Santa Cruz County, Arizona is a hot spot for birdwatchers to catch a glimpse of some of the most beautiful birds in the world. As a result, I couldn’t help but develop an interest in hummingbird watching.

My photography skills are also being developed at the same time while trying to capture images these lightning fast little guys. Some of these hummingbird photos are featured in a slideshow below. All photos were taken in the Patagonia Mountains.

I thought it would be nice to offer these photos to fellow hummingbird lovers to enjoy!

They are a pleasure to watch.  Near the Catalinas where we live, we have not had the swarms that we had last summer.  Too much natural food around, I suppose.  As a result, there are not enough birds to keep one male from dominating the feeder.  Still, it doesn’t keep the others from trying and sometimes it seems two females tag-team the male.  One will appear causing him to chase after her and while they’re away, the other is feeding.

I see a Costa’s, a Broad-Billed and a Black-Chinned in your photos.  Do you see other species that you recognize down there near the border?

I am just starting to research hummingbird identification. I do know that there are some that don’t look like these that I caught the other day.  I might put up another slideshow (with better pictures) in the coming days. Glad there’s someone out there to help identify them!
