WIL CARDON AND HIS “TELLS”
It appears that running for a congressional or Senatorial seat is a tremendous gamble. The candidate gambles with large amounts of money, most of which are donations from citizens such as you and I. He gambles with his reputation as an individual, a citizen and sometimes his business reputation. Generally if one is to make such a large gamble it would seem to be prudent if they did not have what is known as a “TELL”.
For those not accustomed to playing poker a “TELL” is an action you watch for to determine if your opponent is bluffing. Wil Cardon has a specific physical action that he performs when he wants his staffers to block the cameras in the audience. He tugs on his left ear and that signals his campaign staffers to block any video recording of his speech. It’s a relatively simple signal or “TELL” and it is one that I personally was affected by.
July 14, 2012 I attended the Sonoita Elgin Tea Party “Meet Your Candidates “at the Sonoita Fairgrounds and listened to candidate Wil Cardon’s presentation, among others. I had a small video camera, approximately 40 feet from Wil Cardon across the room, set up to record this presentation. As I watched him tug on his left ear his campaign staffer, Mr. Montenegro, picked up a Wil Cardon poster and stepped in front of the camera.
My belief is that you should either not say anything that you are ashamed of hearing repeated or don’t run for office to represent the American public.
Following are some excerpts from the conversation I had with Mr. Montenegro and with Mr. Cardon. Mr. Montenegro admitted that he was doing it on purpose but yet Mr. Cardon said it was not his policy. Which is it Mr. Cardon, are you going to try to prohibit recording your speeches and if so what type of Senatorial representation can we expect from a candidate who will stand and lie to us. In conversation during the incident Mr. Montenegro admitted he was doing it on purpose but when you were confronted (Mr. Cardon) Mr. Montenegro immediately shouted out he didn’t know the camera was there and you sir stated it was not your policy to block cameras.
The document file is as close as I can transcribe some of the interaction with the campaign worker that was blocking my camera. The campaign staffer was Beq Montenegro. I personally was most offended by Mr. Montenegro commenting “no, you don’t want to make videos against us.”
Conversation with Mr. Montenegro and Mr. Cardon
Robert points toward camera
Wil Cardon rep moves to more completely block camera
Robert are you doing that on purpose?
Wil Cardon rep ( comment not understandable)
Robert well that just isn’t fair
Wil Cardon rep they make videos against us just from what he says
Robert well just make a video about them
Wil Cardon rep well that’s playing dirty and we don’t want to do that.
Robert well, you are just doing it
Wil Cardon rep no, you don’t want to make videos against us.
Robert I am going to make a video against you if you do things like this.
Wil Cardon rep then I won’t, just for you, I won’t.
Wil Cardon rep moves back to the left and sets down his sign
Wil Cardon rep 15 seconds later moves back into position in front of camera
Robert you know, this is really rude, now you’re in front of my camera
Wil Cardon rep says something unintelligible and then moves back to the left
Wil Cardon finishes his speech and requested for questions
Robert I have a question
Robert can everyone hear me
audience member give him the microphone
Robert one of the things we try to do when our candidates show up is to
try and take pictures, memories of it, videos of it
Robert to Wil Cardon Is it your policy to have your people stand in front of and block cameras when
You are speaking?
Wil Cardon rep (shouts out) I didn’t know the cameras were here !
Robert yes you did, you told me that you did.
Wil Cardon to Robert no, it’s not my policy but is the policy of the Jeff flake campaign to record
everything they can to make me look bad
Robert to Wil Cardon I’m not with Jeff flake.
Wil Cardon to Robert okay, it’s not my policy. The answer to that is no.
I turned around and walked away, packed up my cameras and left. Some politicians to seem to wear you down and I had several things to consider as to who lied to me about what. It appeared they both lied to me, perhaps I can interest them in a friendly poker game as their tells were so easy.
See everyone down the road at the next meeting. You can make your own decision as to the incident.
