Gila Courier proves why AZ is last in education
by DA Morales on Jul. 06, 2010It’s hard to keep up with all the ignorance going on in this state.
The latest comes from the Gila Courier, which is a perfect example of why ethnic studies courses are needed. Heck, they are a perfect example of why a basic high school education is needed!
The Tucson YWCA has a racial justice program, and the Three Sonorans already reported on how the director of this program was racially profiled herself. The issue that the Gila Courier has with the YWCA is a bit of racial stereotyping itself.
Just as the right-wing has learned to pick up key words out of Glenn Beck’s brain of nonsense, such as to equate progressive with evil, or to boycott any church that preaches “social justice” which he equated to Nazism, even though that is what Jesus was all about, the writer at the Gila Courier has missed the whole point of a message and focused in on one word.
Graffiti.
I can already imagine what is going through the uneducated reader’s mind, images of youth spray painting the entire town illegally.
Sure, there can be illegal graffiti drawn on buildings, just as guns can be used to kill people, but graffiti is an art style that is thousands of years old.
Etymology
Graffiti and graffito are from the Italian word graffiato (“scratched”). “Graffiti” is applied in art history to works of art produced by scratching a design into a surface. A related term is “graffito”, which involves scratching through one layer of pigment to reveal another beneath it. This technique was primarily used by potters who would glaze their wares and then scratch a design into it. In ancient times graffiti was carved on walls with a sharp object, although sometimes chalk or coal were used. The Greek infinitive γράφειν — graphein — meaning “to write”, is from the same root.
History
The term graffiti referred to the inscriptions, figure drawings, etc., found on the walls of ancient sepulchers or ruins, as in the Catacombs of Rome or at Pompeii. Usage of the word has evolved to include any graphics applied to surfaces in a manner that constitutes vandalism.
The earliest forms of graffiti date back to 30,000 BCE in the form of prehistoric cave paintings and pictographs using tools such as animal bones and pigments. These illustrations were often placed in ceremonial and sacred locations inside of the caves. The images drawn on the walls showed scenes of animal wildlife and hunting expeditions in most circumstances.
Will the Gila Courier now call for a boycott of the movie American Graffiti? That movie made over $200 million and was created by no less than George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, and the all-American Ron Howard.
Of course not!
Just like when armed teabaggers march to the Capitol, that is patriotism, but if marchers at Alto Arizona were armed, that would be viewed as an insurrection, riots would ensue, and it would not be viewed as patriotic by Fox News in anyway.
The main point of the YWCA program is to address the legalized racial profiling and other racist laws that are in the works in Arizona. There is an attack on a certain group of people, and if you hate an immigrant, you hate an American-born Latino also, since we look the same. And you simply won’t stop hating a person once they get a piece of paper.
All kinds of hateful rhetoric and lies are infiltrating this state, which is easy when the public here are members of a state that is at the bottom of education rankings in the United States.
American Graffiti good. YWCA racial justice graffiti bad?
I think the best solution is for the Gila Courier to come down and see what is taught at the YWCA and educate themselves before they resort to their uninformed pendejadas. Then they can write on the subject since they will have some first-hand knowledge, que no?
