Signs being placed in Tucson to designate the business is against SB1070

Plaza Azteca Businesses and Tierra Y Libertad Organization Declare an Anti-Racist Zone

Tucson, Arizona – July 21, 2010 – On Thursday, July 22 Plaza Azteca Businesses will declare a zone of non-compliance with SB1070 as part of the “We Reject Racism” campaign. Representatives of businesses located at Plaza Azteca will speak about their opposition to the recent anti-immigrant legislation in the state of Arizona . Tierra Y Libertad Organization and No More Deaths volunteers with the “We Reject Racism” campaign have called for resistance on July 29—Don’t Buy, Don’t Comply, Don’t Work.

Currently over 135 local businesses have posted a sign declaring opposition to SB1070, with many agreeing that law enforcement will not be allowed on their premises for the sole purpose of checking the immigration status of those inside. Organizers with the “We Reject Racism” campaign continue to call for all residents, businesses and institutions to publicly resist SB1070.

“We are bringing signs to homes and businesses in the area in order to show visible resistance to racism. SB1070 is a threat to our community’s ability to be healthy and intact. We all have to take a position and stand on the side of the people. It is the responsibility of each person of conscience to come out of their houses and work for the good of the community. We can’t wait until things get better – together we must make a change in the situation we are living in,” says Imelda Cortez, Tierra Y Libertad youth organizer.

The following Azteca Plaza businesses will offer statements:

Chayitos Curios, Rosario Gonzalez, (520) 882-2707‎
Affordable Ink Tattoo and Make up, Graciela & Mauricio Polanco, (520) 582-8039
Joyeria Guadalajara, Imelda Arias, (520) 770-0655

We Reject Racism Campaign

Tierra Y Libertad Organization and No More Deaths are working together to fight SB1070 in Tucson . We are reaching out to local businesses and households, asking for visible resistance in the form of “We Reject Racism” signs as well as a commitment to on-going resistance to and non-compliance with SB1070. In the neighborhoods where No More Deaths and Tierra Y Libertad are concentrating they are helping to form local networks of support for all people committed to rejecting racism, resisting SB1070, and aiding our friends, neighbors, and each other in this time of many personal and political struggles.
