Would Evan Mecham be popular in Arizona today? (VIDEO)

by on Sep. 03, 2010, under Activism, Civil rights, Election 2010, Headline news, History, political news, Video

Evan Mecham was the Arizona governor who undid the MLK holiday for the state. That led to a boycott of Arizona but it wasn’t until the NFL decided to not have the first Super Bowl even in Arizona that was scheduled that Arizona changed its mind.

So there is hope.

What is interesting though is how people who are seen as immoral or wrong in hindsight can have so much popularity during that time. Just think of how much people defending W and where is he nowadays? Certainly not like Carter or Clinton who are still actively involved in making the world a better place.

And whatever happened to the Crawford ranch that he spent so much time at? You would think he would have retired there instead of to a mansion in Dallas…

Mecham is a bit of a different story since even the Republicans tried to distance themselves even back then. Evan would say bigoted things in public (see video below) that were a no-no back in the olden days of the first Bush Administration in the late 1980s.

Now I wonder how popular he would be in today’s Arizona.

He is certainly smarter than our current unelected governor Jan Brewer, and she has no problem saying racially insensitive things, such as most immigrants coming here are drug mules and beheading people out in the desert.

How popular would Evan Mecham be today? If you want to see some video the type of person who can become governor in Arizona, then just watch the first few minutes of the following video. And keep watching to see how times have changed… for the worse.

I think with you fraser, the relevant question was answered some time ago.

Speaking of things that are tireless, fraser, you will no doubt be pleased to know that your good friend Fidel Castro gave a speech today at the University of Habana.  Though he is 84 years young, the only concession to age was that the speech was very short by Fidel’s usual standards – only 40 minutes.  Viva Fidel!

“My” good friend. Now thats a reach….. Just cant wait for his illness to catch up with that dried up Marxist-Leninist.

Raul seems healthy and I suspect the young people of Cuba will be studying their Marxism and their Leninism for some time.  Anyway, with an attitude like that, you are probably not going to get an invite to the May Day celebration.

My favorite memory of Mecham was when he said he would never hire a person on the basis of skin color, but because they were “the best person for the cotton-pickin’ job”.  I remember his being completely nonplussed when people suggested that this statement might be reflective of some degree of racism on his part.  I see this same sort of subconscious racism in many folks today; people who no doubt really do believe that there is no racism in them or in Joe or Russell, while their actions and words give them away.
