Did God save Gabby’s life and perform a miracle in Tucson last month?

As is well known by now, Gabrielle Giffords’ husband Mark Kelly is an astronaut, and thus one would assume well-versed in the sciences. Contrary to popular belief, this does not lead to atheism, but it does lead to skepticism and a demand for proof and evidence for the explanation of what occurs within this universe, subject to the laws of physics, chemistry, etc.

Mark Kelly the scientist was chosen to speak to the National Prayer Breakfast:

WASHINGTON — Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ husband says his wife continues to improve from a gunshot in the head last month, saying that “Thankfully, miraculously, Gabby survives.”

Speaking to the National Prayer Breakfast, astronaut Capt. Mark Kelly said “I hadn’t been a big believer in faith until just recently.

via Giffords’ husband exults: ‘Gabby survives’.

It is almost always the case that when tragedy strikes, people tend to turn to supernatural forces for an answer.

Even though I understand Mark Kelly’s situation and that he is also saying what the nation, those praying for his wife and for a better future, needs to hear, I will continue with my skepticism.

1. Was it faith or the knowledge of the doctors that saved Gabby’s life? Would prayer have worked through the hands of a random citizen, and without access to the science and technology available in a modern hospital?

In other words, if prayer really words, any person who wasn’t a doctor and without technology could just lay their hands on the person and “heal” them, right?

2. Which God was it that worked the miracle? Was it Jesus, who most people (being Christian) in Tucson were praying to? What of those prayers from those who believe Jesus is not God?

3. If faith really is involved, then why did God allow some to live and others to leave us on that fateful day?

4. If God even has anything to do with this, why did God even allow this to happen in the first place?

These types of questions are not meant to bash on the believers but rather to highlight that sometimes it is not the supernatural that is needed, but rather the natural, the real, the living human beings around us that make miracles happen everyday on their own.

And also the evil present in our world and that there are people living in Tucson today who will commit horrendous acts like this in the future. Not only did this happen with those on Jan 8th, but with Brisenia Flores, Juan Varela, Daniel Rodriguez… who were also all shot by hateful non-minorities because of fear and/or anger. It’s not just immigrants committing all the crime in this state, and also not them we really need to be afraid of.

Continue to pray if you want, but also remember that real actions are needed to fix this city and state. Stop hate speech when you encounter it. Love those around you, even the “crazy” ones, who are actually more in need of love and attention.

We are all in this together, and maybe it is just us, on a lonely planet, a rock going around in circles around a burning sun.  Either way, we are all we have, and I think there is beauty and strength to be found in that.

Another beautiful thing is that maybe what is important is that people prayed to a God without arguing about who that God was, whether Jesus or Yahweh or Allah… but then what’s the point of dogma and religion?

@John, see my answer above – exactly, it appears you are not a theist, move onto other issues.

    • John D.

I refuse. The world I live in has theists in it, and they affect it in no small way. Many wish to legislate their brands of morality onto others, push for their beliefs to be taught as fact in public schools, etc. I would be stupid to ignore that. Religious beliefs are not a sacred cow that is beyond criticism – I suggest you accept that fact and stop feebly demanding we just shut up and stick ourselves in a closet.

I am nosacredcow and I second that John. ;p

Perhaps we ought to listen to her doctor:
Dr. G. Michael Lemole Jr., the hospital’s chief of neurosurgery said, “Miracles happen every day, and in medicine, we like to attribute them to what we do or what others do around us. A lot of medicine is outside our control. We are wise to acknowledge miracles.”
Perhaps we should not listen to asinine columns by writers who hide behind pen names like Three Sonorans. If you want to poke believers in the eye, have the guts to put your name on the article. God works through people. He always has. Read the Bible and you would know that.
Stopping such tragedies from happening would mean that God would have to control us like robots, leaving no room for free will. We do have free will though and often use it to make bad choices that hurt ourselves and others. Again, it’s all in the Book. Humans start making bad choices in Genesis. The first murder occurs in chapter 4 and the killing hasn’t stopped since.
Nonsensical columns like this one are the reason this publication is no longer in print. The Citizen was a terrible paper when it was on actual paper and continues to sink to new lows online. It reminds me of the Tucson Weekly now. No one takes it seriously but it’s fun to read every now and then for a good laugh. If it wasn’t for the occasional link on the Bing News page, I wouldn’t even know you still existed.

          I believe in miracles!

Fatalism and free will. The two are not happy bed fellows. Do fatalists bother to look both ways when crossing the road? It it is all pr-ordained, then god knew this would happen because he designed it to, so the ‘answering’ prayers would be pointless.

If we have free-will and god intervenes on a whim to help some but not others, how can you possible attribute it to a god when there is no evidence? Like the blog says, why lety her get shot in the first place? Why let the chilean miners get trapped and then show no miracles for the New Zealand miners. Only a person desperate to hang on to some kind of invisible magic at any cost can take your line. And there are many of you, where your need to believe will usurp any fact and reason.

If you are not a theist, why are you worrying about these questions? And if you are not a theist and you are worried, then you can go and find some good books like, God is great, God is God by William Lane Craig and read it. And if you are asking for asking sake, then I say, don’t worry your head about it because you aren’t really seeing an answer; just live your life, and let those of us who are theists worry about these questions.

God gave the doctors the skills they need to do the surgeries.

    • John D

Really? It takes an average of 12 years of school and training for someone to become a doctor. You can then add on however many years of additional experience they had to perform this surgery. How exactly does God enter into this equation?

    • http://N/A SoftRockDD

Yes! God did give the skills.  Unbelievers will not believe until the end it would seem. All those questions they can direct to God when they finally meet Him. It is a sad state of affairs when people believe lies over truth. Satan is a liar and a conjure too. He lied and said God does not exist. He lied and said Jesus is God. He lied and said that he does not exist. There’s no convincing unbelievers with our faith. Just keep on living. Every knee must bend. Every head must bow. Every tongue will confess. Better hope it’s not too late. Oh ye of NO FAITH – NO BELIEF – NO WONDER!!!
