OccupyTUSD will begin with a daily protest from 4-6pm at the Tucson Unified School District headquarters at 1010 E. Tenth St, on the NE corner of Broadway and Park.

This morning the students from Cholla High School walked out and marched to TUSD. Asst. Supe Dr. Garcia came out to tell them that MAS was not good for them, violating the terms of the federal court’s desegregation order on TUSD, a district that is 61% Latino that the Ninth Circuit court ruled has a severe race problem.

The order requires that MAS not only be offered but expanded, and the TUSD board is in direct violation and can be held liable for this racist action that violates the federal court, pretending as if the state law trumps a federal court order.

Pedicone and his posse will also be held accountable, including Dr. Garcia who calls the MAS courses anti-American and yet this is who Pedicone put in charge of supervising the federally court ordered MAS program.

In the end our community will win, and people like Pedicone may end up in serious trouble with the feds. Racism against Latinos will not be taken lightly.

The daily protests at TUSD begin today at 4pm.

I love how they turn everything into a race issue. “Racism against latinos” AHAHAHAHAHA, you pray to a white Jesus, get over yourselves.

“you pray to a white Jesus, get over yourselves.”

Jesus was White? From where do you make that assertion?

“I love how they turn everything into a race issue.”  You must be talking about the Horne and Huppenthal gang, right?

I see some more arrests coming…

Lol! Yep, I can see that you are bringing in the political heavyweights again. I can definitely see why, given how devastatingly effective they were BEFORE THE VOTE!

I bet TUSD is shaking in their boots………. again!

The only thing these people need to occupy is a job!

This will be resolved in the courts. What has happened since the state legislation designed to destroy a program brought into existence by the Federal courts to combat racism in TUSD to the penalties imposed by the authors of said legislation to the ‘vote’ by a board that had been ‘stacked’ against the wishes of the voters is in violation of the intent at the very least if not the letter of the rulings by Federal court.

They have reason to shake in their boots. At this point – my speculation – the Federal courts will see the ‘vote’ by the board as just an extension of a long history of racism at TUSD. Recall Maddox and Wallace were both elected officials that were acting within the framework of local law. And they were as wrong as the state officials – Huppenthal and Horne – and the TUSD officials.

This will be on the front page of the New York Times this year. People will conflate -

      Bull Conners – Joe Arpaio

      Lester Maddox – Huppenthal

      George Wallace – Horne

Arizona is the new deep south and the Mexican American (and Native American) cultures are the new ‘blacks’.

This isnt over. Far from it.

Problem is that TUSD should have appealed to the Fed courts and didn’t.
The only remaining hope is that one student’s suit has been grated standing – if it weren’t for him the feds would have trouble getting involved.

The cowardice of the TUSD board will remain a black spot on AZ history for years – but then there are so many black spots…

This is fluid – and it is early. we will have to see what role organizations like the ACLU and probably other hispanic organizations do.

Yes, Horne and Hupe are racists, Huerta was right, Republicans hate Latinos, the law is unconstitutional, and I believe it will be overturned in the courts. BUT people seem to be forgetting that HB2281 didn’t outlaw AlLL Ethnic Studies. It targeted these specific Mexican American Studies classes. So, MAS could be reborn in different format, one with wider reach better defined goals, and better program evaluation.

The Occupiers’ time would be better spent with teach-ins and brainstorming with MAS stalwarts, rather than marching. Would that be a surprise turn of events? A racist law results in more Latinos being educated and served? It is time to think outside of the box.

They’ve even revived and modernized one of the old favorites of the Jim Crow South: the “outside agitator”.  Instead of “them outside agitators comin’ in to get “our negroes” all worked up”, here in Tucson they say that the “students are being misled” by adults with evil intentions.  The more bigots think they are different from their philosophical predecessors, the more things stay the same.
