Jack the Cat is found
by Karyn Zoldan on Oct. 26, 2011, under Cats Meow, Feline Fun, Pet Health & SafetyJack the Cat is back. No, that’s not a Dr. Seuss title but a real life tale that unfolded on Facebook in late August.
With so many lost and missing cats, why the Jack the Cat phenomenon?
Jack along with another cat Barry were flying in baggage from JFK to San Francisco where their owner Karen was taking a new job. Barry made it to SFO safely but Jack was lost in the cargo area.
The drama was intense. I really think because of the pressures of social media, American Airlines had to pay attention. More than 16,000 people liked the Facebook page and right now more than 2,800 are talking about it.
Now Karen is flying back east to be by Jack the Cat’s side. (I hope American Airlines gives her a free first class round trip ticket for her and Jack and pays for Jack’s vet bills — the very least they can do). Jack the Cat is at the vet getting much needed fluids.
A microchip confirmed that the cat was indeed Jack.
According to the most recent Facebook post:
Jack is stable but will need treatment for at least the next 3-5 days. He does have fatty liver disease, which occurs when a cat hasn’t eaten in a while. He is currently not stable enough to be operated on, and is being fed through a nasal tube. There’s every reason to believe he’s going to be ok, but he definitely needs to get healthier before he can fly back home. Karen is VERY confident he is getting GREAT care and she will be coming back to NYC to pick him up and celebrate very soon!!!
During this whole debacle, Jack’s person Karen has been positive at least to her Facebook followers. I give her high marks for that. I am more of a skeptic and would’ve been hysterical with the need to be heavily sedated.
There is so much sad and bad news in the world today — I am wanting a happy ending. I also hope that American Airlines reviews their animals in baggage policy and procedures. According to Dog Law, the skies are not so pet friendly for travel.
