Tucson Skechers Protest – January 28

The following email was sent to the President and VP of Skechers, Mark Cuban (owner of Dallas Mavericks who has a cameo role) and NBC.

“Dear Mr. Greenburg:
I am a huge fan of Skechers, and own many pair.

However, I am very concerned about the ad that you will be running during the Super Bowl featuring Greyhound racing. Although you have stated that this ad does not promote Greyhound racing, in fact it does.

This is a cruel, inhumane sport. Many states have been forced to close down their racing tracks, when the cruelty of the sport was documented by the media and Greyhound rescue groups. I had the privilege of owning a rescued Greyhound for 8 years. He was severely injured on the track while racing at Seabrook Greyhound Park in Seabrook, New Hampshire (which is now closed permanently). Once injured, and no longer a financial asset he was thrown into a cage, left for three days without treatment until the rescue group came along to save him. There was great expense involved with his rehabilitation, which the owner and the track refused to pay.

I must tell you that these are majestic animals with nothing but love in their hearts and to have your company use them once again for PROFIT is inexcusable.

Therefore I am asking you to cancel the ad, not just for the Super Bowl, but forever.

Please take this request seriously, as a consumer of your product, I will do everything in my power to have a negative impact on your company, if this ad should run. This is not an idle threat, there a many, many Greyhound lovers across the country that will willingly boycott your products. “

I did not write this letter but the Trudo family of Tucson did and gave me permission to use it. Hundreds of similar letters from across the country were written asking Skechers to retract their ad promoting dog racing. All letters and more than 114,000 Change.org petition signatures seem to have gone to deaf arrogant ears.

In the proposed Skechers ad, a French bulldog named Mr. Quiggly is seen wearing some Skechers shoes and races the greyhounds. Mercifully none fell and broke their legs and hocks during the filming of the ad. Most likely this French bulldog never had to eat RAW 4D meat from dead, dying, diseased, and downer animals. Most likely the French bulldog never lived in filthy conditions. Yes, dogs leaving TGP are diagnosed with E.coli and hookworms, loop worms, and Giardia. Mr. Quiggly may even be some exec’s pampered pet (shouldn’t they all be pampered?) and never had to race for his life like the thousands of greyhounds that still do in the U.S. and abroad. Most likely if Mr. Quiggly falls and breaks his leg or hock or shoulder; he won’t be euthanized nor will he have to sit in a dark cage and wait for some adoption group to save his life…if he’s lucky.

A peaceful protest against this ad will be held at:
3175 N. Campbell Avenue @ SW corner of Ft. Lowell & Campbell, Tucson
Saturday, January 28, 2012
11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Bring a sign or use an existing one.

Stand up against dog racing cruelty

Stand up against dog racing cruelty

If you live in Boston, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, New Mexico, Michigan, Florida, Portland, So. Calif, etc, there will be other Skechers protests too. Join in this weekend. Here’s the schedule. You need not have a beloved greyhound in your life to participate.

According to the Skechers press release …”will use humor to illustrate how SKECHERS now produces performance footwear that’s exceeding expectations and impressing runners and athletes everywhere.” Maybe that’s the case this year, but the shoes that Skechers previously promoted are now facing a class action lawsuit.

Well, at least the people who became injured while wearing the Skechers ShapeUp shoes were not euthanized.

It is unconscionable that Skechers would shoot an ad at this notorious dog track where hundreds of dogs live lives of confinement and suffer injuries on the track.

At Tucson Greyhound Park, greyhounds are kept confined in small cages which are barely large enough for them to stand up or turn around.  They are fed raw 4-D meat, the meat of downed, diseased, disabled or dead livestock.  This was documented in a recent video investigation.

While racing, greyhounds face the risk of serious injury. According to state records, between January 2007 and November 2009, nearly 1,000 greyhound injuries were reported at Arizona racetracks. The most common injury was a broken leg, and other reported injuries included fractures, sprains, dislocations, muscle tears and strains, lacerations, a cracked skull, broken backs, heat stroke, puncture wounds and paralysis. You guys have no idea what you are talking about. Shame on you.

They have a much firmer grasp on reality than you do, “south tucson citizen”.  Or should we just call you “Greyhound Park executive”?

I have been inside a kennel at TGP and they are disgusting, dark, cramped and inhumane.  I have rescued dogs from TGP and all of them came with helath problems, and in some cases, resulting in early deaths. Skechers should pull this ad and run an ad promoting adotpion instead.

That’s a nice cut and paste job by Val Wolf from her Grey2k playbook. 4D meat is used by the pet food industry. It is perfectly safe for pet consumption. The USDA approves it, and there are no cases of Greyhounds becoming sick by eating it. The crates at Tucson Greyhound Park are MORE than large enough for even the biggest Greyhound to comfortably stand, turn around and lay down. They are turned out 5 – 6 times a day for exercise and play. Based on the injury reports obtained by Grey2k, the injury rate in Arizona during her stated period of time is 0.03%. Greyhound Racing is very safe. It should be noted that the president and executive director of Grey2k receive salaries and benefits equaling almost 30% of money donated to their “charity”.

      Gross,
You are correct about one thing — 4D meat is used by the pet industry. However, the pet industry cooks it. The greyhound racing industry serves it up RAW. I bet you don’t dish it out for your pet dogs RAW? If RAW 4D meat was such a great idea — why isn’t Purina or IAMS marketing it to the billion dollar pet consumers?
      According to the CDC:
*CVM is aware of the sale of dead, dying, disabled, or diseased (4-D) animals to salvagers for use as animal food. Meat from these carcasses is boned and the meat is packaged or frozen without heat processing. The raw, frozen meat is shipped for use by several industries, including pet food manufacturers, zoos, greyhound kennels, and mink ranches. This meat may present a potential health hazard to the animals that consume it and to the people who handle it.*
Raw meat diets have been fed to working and racing sled dogs, racing greyhounds, and captive noncompanion animals (big cats, wolves, bears, etc.) in zoos, rescue facilities, and wildlife parks for many years. Most of the time, these diets have comprised so-called “4D” meats that have been condemned for human consumption. The first raw meat diets for companion animals were also made from 4D, feed grade, and other questionable source meats and by-products.
      There’s more:
Dead, dying, disabled and diseased animals are picked up by rendering plants that use the animals for pet food. If livestock is still living, it is slaughtered, and the remains are boiled to render the high-energy fat and reduce the meat and bone meal for their protein.
The end product is not for human consumption but is considered edible by animals.

Nonetheless, a Greyhound has never been harmed by eating 4D meat. It’s perfectly safe. By the way Karyn, what a racially insensitive comment you made on Facebook – “Middle class educated white people don’t go to bet on the dogs”. What a horrible thing to say.
