Tucson, Ariz. – With 8 million homeless pets entering U.S. shelters every year, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona is helping to solve the problem with its “Primp Your Pit (bull)” spay/neuter promotion sponsored by PetSmart Charities®. During the promotion, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona will spay or neuter 200 pit bulls and pit bull mixes for a special rate of $20, including a free nail trim. (August only)

Today, 35 percent of dogs and cats in U.S. households are not spayed or neutered. Yet, the procedure is one of the most effective ways to reduce the homeless pet population. Pit bulls, in particular, end up in shelters in large numbers because of the negative public perceptions that are associated with the breed.

“The ‘Primp Your Pit’ promotion is a great way to create awareness about spaying and neutering and come to together as a community to help stop animal overpopulation,” says Samantha Esquivel, Public Relations Lead at the Humane Society of Southern Arizona. “Spaying and neutering a pet is the most effective step to prevent unwanted litters and ensure your pet lives a long, happy life.”

The American Veterinary Medical Association endorses spaying and neutering puppies as young as eight to 10 weeks old, and research shows that the procedure can improve the behavior and health of the pet, including reducing the risk of certain reproductive cancers and infections.

Any Pima County pit bull or pit bull mix owner can take advantage of special $20 rate during the “Primp Your Pit (bull)” – just mention the “Primp Your Pit (bull)” promotion when scheduling an appointment. There are a limited number of promotional surgeries available so please be sure to schedule an appointment. Please visit the website or call (520) 881-0321 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

I realize it’s a very small thing, but using a black kid to advertise a pit bull neuter campaign that is funded by charity seems a bit culturally insensitive, given the negative stereotype of black people being poor and owning a lot of pit bulls.

that is hilarious and (somewhat) true.

yes, but Petsmart still discriminates against the Pit Bull breeds in their doggy day care and over-night boarding facilities.
when one calls the Petsmart corporate office in Phoenix to inquire as to the rational behind their ban… they claim there have been incidents with Pit Bulls and their employees. when asked to share documentation of these incidents, there has never been a response.

oddly, before I knew of this discrimination, I boarded my (then) 1 1/2 year old Pit Bull at the location in Tustin, CA and the employee who checked her in documented her as a Lab Mix. Upon picking up my dog, her doggy report card was straight A+’s and the staff all made it a point to come out and say good bye and hoped we would return.

coincidentally, Petsmart uses a Red Nose Pit Bull on their in-store promotional posters for their Doggy Hotel.

though a theory, I personally believe that Petsmart discriminated against the Pit Bull breeds based on pure monetary concerns: “If we allow a pit bull in our doggy day care or over night boarding, owners of other breeds with no longer PAY to board their dogs with us.”

One has to LOVE corporate America and their “Thinking outside of the box is BAD” mentality.
