Remembering 9/11 Hero Dogsby Karyn Zoldan on Sep. 11, 2013, under Animal News, Dogs, Canines, Fun with Fido, Barking Encouraged
I don’t know about you but 9/11 was one of the defining moments in my life. Indelible images that will never be erased from my memory.
I found a tribute on the American Thinker about the rescue and cadaver dogs, as well as their handlers. The tribute interviewed Nora Kilgore Bauer who authored a book (published 2006), Dog Heroes of September 11th: A Tribute to America’s Search and Rescue Dogs. Throughout the book there are excerpts from the handlers that described the atmosphere as smoldering debris with deep odors, smoke, dust, and noise, having to face death all around.
The article goes on to explain how various canine search and rescue teams participated; it wasn’t a walk in the park.
Here’s a touching slideshow (dated 2011) to remind us how these 4-legged heroes and their handlers tremendously helped where they were needed.
